Quoting: tatmark1 ive fought professional mma. certainly not afraid to throw down ah much respect for muay thai, very tough style. Personally Im not a fan of grappling as I am mainly a striker and have gotten into many arguments about a good striker always beating a grappler, even when on the ground. I guess for that to work you need heavy bone structure and proper punching technique, both of which i have plenty of. How have you fared against strikers? What are you talking about a good striker always beating a good grappler? I'm assuming you've seen those Royce Grace UFCs? |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 18260563 09/28/2012 08:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No "formal" training other than a couple years of TKD. However, grew up in a "frisky" neighborhood. Also, being smaller in stature (5'7", 160lbs) - if someone was going to get fucked with - it was going to be me. And one of my good personal friends fought pro MMA for a while (granted, his record was like 2-7-1) before a medical issue arose and we used to wrestle together. He is HUGE compared to me (6'1", 230ish), and I can say that nothing will make you better faster than sparring and wrestling with someone who is at that level. For the most part, I let words settle where they started. Not worth it. But the instant someone puts their hands on me (grabs me, strikes at me, charges me, throws something at me, etc.) then it is on. I have learned: - Trash will use anything as a weapon and do whatever it takes - Once someone is down, you better hit them enough times that they stay down - and are too scared to try to jump you with their boys later on - If your not a big guy, get in close, grapple, and learn to strike with your elbows, knees, and headbutts (I have won MORE fights with elbows to the face with a hand on the back of the head for uhhh "target control" than any other thing) - Once it is on, go from calm and cool to raging screaming because it scares 99% of people who are NOT trained to fight. It freaks them out. And 90%+ of a fight is mental. - A LOT of big guys, are half as bad as they think. Sure they are strong. But they usually bully people around and never "have" to fight - A Lot of smaller guys, that aren't afraid, usually have a reason not to be. A weapon or they can brawl. - If you are out numbered - your ultimately going to lose. Accept this and try to take out as many as you can before you get clipped hard. - If you fight someone with a knife, no matter who you are and how well trained you are - you are an idiot... Id rather run to fight another day than loose and let a psycho stab away ... Also, I have found that anytime anyone grabs me by my chest (which idiots still do for some reason? This isn't Hollywood), if I split violently with my arms through the middle ~ I can reach past their face, grab their head, and headbutt someone with a pretty serious strike. Then it is onward with a baragge of elbows, knees, kicks, punches, etc. to bring it to the ground with me on top and in control. Nothing with prepare you for your first fight and if there is one your most likely to loose, it will be the first. You wont be able to handle the adrenaline rush, will not think, and will feel like your legs are made a jelly. Learning to stay calm and collected is a learned skill for some and a natural skill for few. It is an impossibility for others (who ultimately, will never be good at self defense) |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 18260563 09/28/2012 08:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Also, on a side note - I have my CCW, and have NEVER pulled my weapon on anyone. If you do carry a firearm, please make the distinction between someone trying to fight you (cause your a raging dick) and someone trying to kill you (cause your a raging dick). A weapon should NEVER be used until you are literally in a life or death scenario and must defend your life or suffer fatal injuries. In a lot of countries, guns are pulled when they are not needed. Don't be the guy that pulls your weapon cause your afraid to loose a fight. Loosing a fight and loosing your life are two entirely different things. Know that distinction. |

I LOL when I see some of these UFC fights with their piss poor version of a jab. I know for a fact that a fighter with a lightning stiff jab and good inside hooks would embarrass Jon Paul Jones inside one round. James Toney learned the hard way against Randy Couture. Randy took him down and humiliated him The stance to just box VS a MMA style it most definetely different. Even if the boxer is a better boxer the MMA guy should be smart enough to take them down and pound or twist limbs off. In the real world the boxer only can get a good punch in or get embarrased. Usually Boxer loses. |

It is a good way to lose your life, or end up in jail, and the karma is no good. I choose to avoid physical altercations, up to the point of being in danger, or having family or friends in danger. There are a lot of people with weapons, and you decide to fight some guy for some stupid reason, and you start to win, and he pulls a knife of gun, and boom you are dead, for some stupid reason. I am definitely the wrong guy to fuck with. |

Continued fighting with broken hands, cracked wrist & cracked fibula. You do not feel the pain till it is over. With that said ... ring fighting skills are good, but there is a reason more advanced martial artists move from the ring into weapons, Ho Sin Sool & Hapkido techniques. It is good to be fast but it is equally important to be able to fight close Q and develop good grappling techniques. It is also good to learn to identify readily available weapons that most untrained peeps only see as a common, harmless item just laying about. GLP has some very well trained male & female fighters, as well as seasoned vets. Sadly, also no shortage of keyboard warriors -- must admit though, a keyboard could be deadly if properly utilized ;o) Edit: Sitting here with a cracked ankle at the moment, cracked it during kicking drills -- you know the old force/velocity/mass thingy got me. 1 more week & I am back in business!!! His face immediately turned to an expression of terror when i didn't flinch and proceeded to send him flying 5ft into two other people who went flying along with him. I start raising my fists yelling at him to get up when I feel this HUGE arm go around my throat, thinking one of his friends was trying to jump me I immediately powered out of the chokehold only to see it was a bouncer. We wrestled for a few mins with me getting the better of him and walking out on my own. I'll be dammed if some mofo hauls me out in a chokehold. Whatever bitch. |
