Smartphone Emergency Alerts Widget Suddenly appears on Verizon phones
These alerts will be sent only to those in the immediate threat area. I assume so as not to create mass panic. The alert types are as follows:

Presidential (Mandatory)
Severe and Extreme threat alerts
Amber Alerts

The alerts are created by our government and sent via Verizon Wireless service.
An alert was recently sent out to people in several New Jersey counties and freaked people out for about an hour wondering why they were being told to take shelter immediately. Unfortunately, the alert was not clearly noted as a test. Big Surprise, right?!!!

Here's a link to the article about the emergency alert recently sent to people in several New Jersey counties:

[link to www.cbsnews.com]

Seems fishy to me!! What do others think? Personally, the widget just appeared on my phone this past week after a re-boot. The link refers to the incident in New Jersey of nearly a year ago. Weird!

BTW, the incident in New Jersey occurred in December of 2011. I find it odd the widget has appeared on my phone all this time later.

Have you seen the widget on your Verizon smartphone? When did you discover it? Have you received any alerts?

I have been working in Las Vegas selling advertising for RV parks the last five years. Many is the time when Nellis AFB has shut down cell and internet service for a period of time. Even more often, they interfere so much internet won't work worth a damn.

I have to admit, it came as a surprise when I noticed the Emergency Alerts widget on my phone. I checked it out and couldn't help wonder why there seems to be a need for this unless there really is an eminent need for it. I hope it will be used legitimately. I want to be informed as opposed to uninformed. However, I don't want to be messed with!

Just checked out the app info for the Emergency alerts app on my Verizon smartphone.

At the very bottom of the page info it says:

This application can access the following on your phone:

YOUR Messages, edit SMS or MMS, read SMS or MMS, receive CMAS.

Here is a link I just found to a very good article on the smartphone emergency alerts system. Please read carefully and note the agencies collaborating on this. It lists the three main including FEMA, Nat'l Weather Service, and wireless carriers. Then it says "and other government agencies".

The comments section below this article is good fodder too...

My girlfriend has been getting them, but I have not. My phone is rooted, hers isn't.

She got one that said "Tornado warning! Please take cover now!" with nothing else. We turn on the news and the closest tornadoes are about 25 miles away. Give me a break.

It does concern me this may become one of these "cry wolf" situations where we won't know if we should respond or not.

However, I am originally from tornado alley. I wouldn't have taken shelter at that moment, but I would have been keeping an eye peeled for sure and doing what you did; I would tune in on TV.

The funny thing about this is that they assume the fragile cell networks will be around to pass the message. LOL.

Get a ham radio, a cellphone is worthless in a real emergency (real, like BIG doom red dawn style real, not flat tire)

ETA: No I don't have such an app I'm on ATT.

Look for it to appear though, as I posted an earlier link which states ATT has implemented this. After all, this has been in development for nearly a year now. Mine just appeared this last week after i did a battery pull.

I've got verizon, and starting a few days ago, mine has been glitching up like crazy! Keep having to do a battery-pull reset.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if the two are connected?

I'm not aware of any pre-authorization I have made for this service, and seeing as all of the family cell phones are in MY name...to which I pay the monthly service for...I am the ONLY one that can authorize changes.

Just little old me...not you, not the prez...not anyone.

We're supposed to trust his judgement to what is deemed an 'emergency'? When the man can't even define the word 'tact'??

.....laughing....please..... laughing .....stop...
laughing ....stop before laughing laughing I pee laughing myself...
laughing ....seriously.... laughing

In the past several months I have seen more than 1 act of 'tacky' come from this administration. However...the paypal accounts that were set up in which to send donations to the prez campaign fund was great!

How thoughtful of them! hf

If you (or I) thought that we didn't already pay enough in taxes to keep Washington in the lap of luxury they've grown accustomed to, they made it sooo very convenient to donate to their anniversary fund! Or the funds collected from your garage/rummage/yard sale. Or my personal favorite, forfeit your wedding gift!! How awesome! thumbs

Hold on.....I'm being channeled....I am gazing into my crystal ball....and an image is beginning to form....wait for it.....wait for it....it's getting clearer....clearer.....

GOT IT!!!

I see in my immediate future, a near perfect 99.9999 percent probability....that if there is no 'opt-out' available on my smart-phone-verizon-account that someone sitting at this keyboard (not naming names) will cancel any and all cell service indefinitely!!! thumbs

(((huge applause is heard around the world)))

thank you.....thank you very much....I'm here every Thursday!!!

just remember: a threat only remains a threat til you take it to the next level....then it becomes an 'action'
