Taking too many liberties: Taxes Without Borders World Health Organization mulling global cigarette tax

I certainly do hope that all non-smokers wake up this time with this as it will open the door to many other ugly taxes especially when the cigarette tax sources cease. If the World Health Organization succeeds then we will have the UN, IMF and other global agencies all wanting their own tax upon the world these agencies should be disbanded.

World Health Organization mulling global cigarette tax

The World Health Organization (WHO) is considering a global excise tax of up to 70 percent on cigarettes at an upcoming November conference, raising concerns among free market tax policy analysts about fiscal sovereignty and bureaucratic mission creep.

In draft guidelines published this September, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control indicated it may put a cigarette tax on the table at its November conference in Seoul, Korea.

Like "defaming [the prophet of Islam] religion" they will use something everyone knows "is bad" to make you forget the issue.

They could not care less about cigarettes but the idea of a global-wide enforceable power makes those sickos moan in ecstasy.

You are correct they will choose something most people consider bad to keep the outrage from the sheep down and once they open the door there is no closing it. It is much as the taxation and regulations placed upon tobacco by our federal and state government claiming to be for the good of the stupid people who could not be trusted to make their own decisions.

I believe that the U.N. gets a % of the 'carbon-tax' that the Aussies pay, just seems like an extension of that.

Seems that all of these 'grand' bodies now need to get into a legal way of extorting money from the plebs under the guise of 'if they comply with advice it'll cost them less'. i.e. Don't smoke; don't pay, Reduce your Carbon foot-print; pay less, etc.

We seem to have entered a pretty scary scenario where un-elected groups will be soon be in a position to dictate their whims onto everyone, just because our elected 'leaders' didn't see the end-game and signed up to it because it was vogue at the time.

I don’t smoke. I can’t stand the stench or the litter that results from inconsiderate ill-mannered smokers who carelessly toss their cigarettes out car windows and squash them on the ground wherever they happen to be standing at the moment.

BUT

Government taxes on legal products for no other reason than to pressure the public into stopping something that governments can’t get a law passed to stop is wrong. What is worse is that the WHO and the UN do not have the authority to levy a tax on American citizens because they do not represent us and have no place in our legislative process whatsoever.

If this is allowed to happen by our corrupt NWO biased government then you can bet your ass other taxes, regulations, and violations of basic rights will follow. Think they can’t or won’t ban free speech or guns? This attempt at a world tax without representation from an organization so far removed from any control of US citizens is a step towards a tyranny that can not be peacefully undone.

I am aware of the propaganda and their pseudo benevolence however once they eliminate the selling of cigarettes and created a more vibrant black market and those who will grow their own tobacco thus the money will dry up what will they tax next.

This is a door that should not be opened for any reason after all it is the WHO that established Codex Alimentarius whereby the ultimate goal will be all vitamins, minerals and supplements will be regulated by them.

And everything you do is next; they are just making a legal precedence to tax.

It is not about cigarettes in any way it is about a multinational organization who wants the ability to tax without borders.

This will explode if allowed and every multination organization out there will want a piece of the pie.

We are just begging the UN to start taxing countries for “defending” them.

You think corporations are bad,? Just wait, this is a whole new monster that will reap destruction on all.

According to the city of New York, so are soft drinks larger than 16 ounces. If you think that is an acceptable violation of your liberties then further conversation with you is pointless. That is also the exact type of tyrannical control over your private life that the UN wants. If you think the UN will stop at cigarettes you must be a brainwashed idiot.

Those who would sacrifice a little liberty for a little security deserve neither and will lose both.

Re: Taking too many liberties: Taxes Without Borders World Health Organization mulling global cigarette tax
All that's going to happen is people will produce and distribute cigarettes on their own. This will cause crime to increase and taxes will have to be raised on the public to fund a larger police force and build more prisons. In the end, taxpayers will enjoy footing $40k+ a year per inmate and policemen will spend more time cracking down on cigarette growers/dealers instead of hardened criminals.

Also, as other posters have mentioned, this will be just the beginning of new global taxes. Whatever happened to no taxation without representation?

If governments and other bureaucracies were really smart they'd make a law to ban bad behavior and make a law requiring us all to be rich. Problem solved.
