Younger ‘Mona Lisa’ attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci by experts
A painting that appears similar to Leonardo Da Vinci’s iconic Mona Lisa has been attributed to the master by a group of experts. They plan to present their findings in Geneva today.

According to the AP, the Zurich-based Mona Lisa Foundation claims that after 35 years of research, it has indisputable evidence to prove that the Isleworth Mona Lisa was painted by Da Vinci 11 to 12 years before the famous painting that hangs in the Louvre.

“So far, not one scientific test has been able to disprove that the painting is by Leonardo," art historian and foundation member Stanley Feldman told the AP. “We have used methods that were not available to Leonardo 500 years ago.” Feldman is the author of the foundation’s book, Mona Lisa: Leonardo’s Earlier Version, which will be released today.

The Isleworth painting is very similar to the well-known Mona Lisa, but it shows a younger woman smiling in front of a different background. Everything else, including the posture and placing of the hands, is similar.

However, many dispute the foundation’s results. “So much is wrong,” Da Vinci expert Martin Kemp told Reuters. He and many others have noted that the Isleworth painting was done on canvas rather than wood, the medium Da Vinci used for his works.

“The infrared reflectography and X-ray points very strongly to its not being by Leonardo,” Kemp told the AP.

The Isleworth painting has been known about for decades, having been discovered in 1913 by collector Hugh Blaker. Henry Pulitzer bought it in 1936 after Blaker’s death, then deposited it in a Swiss bank and wrote a book about it in 1972. It is currently owned by an international consortium and sits in a Swiss vault.

Art Group: This Is Young Mona Lisa

(Newser) – The world has a second Mona Lisa painting by da Vinci to ooh and aah over, says a Swiss art group. The Mona Lisa Foundation asserted today that years of historical and scientific research proves that the artist painted two portraits of Lisa del Giocondo at different ages, about 10 years apart, reports the BBC. The older one is hanging in the Louvre. The younger one, known as the Isleworth Mona Lisa, has been the subject of debate for decades—is it a skillful copy or a separate, authentic painting?

"We have investigated this painting from every relevant angle and the accumulated information all points to it being an earlier version of the (Mona Lisa) in the Louvre," says the foundation. (The group's website and related video is here, and it also has a new book on the subject, notes the Los Angeles Times.) The painting is owned by an anonymous consortium, so it's unclear who, if anyone, would profit from the designation—assuming it holds up. There's "no basis for thinking that there was an earlier portrait," says one skeptical Oxford professor.
