Representative Kay Granger, a Texas Republican, said today she will block a White House move to give Egypt $450 million

“This proposal comes to Congress at a point when the U.S.- Egypt relationship has never been under more scrutiny, and rightly so,” Granger, chairwoman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, said in a statement. “I am not convinced of the urgent need for this assistance and I cannot support it at this time.”

“I have placed a hold on these funds,” she said. Granger doesn’t have legal authority to prevent the administration from releasing the money, making her action an informal effort to stop the funding, according to a congressional aide who wasn’t authorized to comment publicly.

US plan for Egypt aid hits roadblock
The chairwoman of the US House committee blocks US government's move to transfer $450m in assistance to Egypt.

Representative Kay Granger, a Republican, said on Friday that the State Department had notified Congress of plans to transfer the money to the new government of President Mohamed Morsi, a move that Granger said she would stop.

"This proposal comes to Congress at a point when the US-Egypt relationship has never been under more scrutiny, and rightly so," the chairwoman of the Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations said in a statement.

"I am not convinced of the urgent need for this assistance and I cannot support it at this time ... I have placed a hold on these funds."

Granger's action reflects unease among some US politicians over the new government that has taken the reins in
Egypt after a pro-democracy uprising overthrew longtime US ally Hosni Mubarak last year.

The relationship between the US and Egypt has been rocky since the revolution. Egypt's government also angered Washington when it cracked down on numerous democracy advocates and groups, including three US-funded non-governmental organisations, earlier this year.

More recently, demonstrators breached the US embassy in Cairo to protest an anti-Islam video, and some in Congress have called for cutting off aid.

An influential Republican lawmaker, Representative Kay Granger of Texas, immediately announced that she would use her position as chairwoman of the House appropriations subcommittee overseeing foreign aid to block the distribution of the money. She said the American relationship with Egypt “has never been under more scrutiny” than it is in the wake of the election of President Mohamed Morsi, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood...

...The protests over an anti-Muslim video and the storming of the American Embassy in Cairo on Sept. 11 came even as senior White House and State Department officials led a large business delegation to promote economic assistance and trade in Egypt.

Mr. Morsi’s slow response to the protests raised concerns in Washington, although administration officials later cited improved cooperation over the embassy’s security.

The $1 billion in assistance has been cobbled together from funds already appropriated by Congress, but the administration is required to notify lawmakers of its intention to release any of the funds. We have been weakened...some have no jobs, some are finding it hard to get up each morning and work for half of what they were making 4 years ago..some are working two jobs to pay their bills..I see that every day here...yes it is SAD.

This is the "battered woman" syndrome...many have lost the will to fight, they are too busy surviving..A lot feel powerless to make a change...
