I think it is tied to the system of taxation 666 in the old testament was the amount of talants Solomon brought in every year. (SSN, IRS, Federal Income Tax and the money changers.) How else would the Mark implicate those who receive it in the sins of the beast? Keep in mind that the mark will be universal-like the central bankers (who i think may be descendents of the money changers. Notice when the conspiracy against Christ begins)

Exodus 13 also foreshadows the mark.

Ultimately it will be a mark on our character (our thoughts and actions), of slavery, or ownership. Predatory marketing comes to mind.

Not all are lost because if you look in Ezekiel you will see a story of a man marking people who sigh and lament the sins which go on around them. You know God is good and desires as many be saved as possible. You know many have been sealed with His Holy Spirit, and many more come to believe every day. I think we are approaching that time where God will be calling His people out of her lest we share in her judgements.
