So I got a bit pissy lol I just don't get how when this story got posted just 2 days ago on this very forum they were saying it would reach -7 and then just days later with no change in the comet really they shove the numbers up to -16 and yet both the -7 or -10 or 16 or -26 its all just a prediction. Each number of magnitude is 2.51 higher or lower. i.e. 1 is 2.51 times brighter then 2. 1 is 6.3001 times brighter then 3 (2.51 * 2.51) 1 is 15.81 times brighter then 4 (2.51^3) 1 is 39.7 times brighter then 5 (2.51^4) and so on. Sun is -26 and the comet is -16. This means the comet is (1/(2.51^10)) or (1/9925)= 0.0001 the Suns output. 0.0001/1 = 0.01/100 The comet is 1 hundreth of a percent as bright as the Sun. |

I understand that. I am noting the reflected light will be additional to daylight, versus reflection at night like the Moon. I also want to point out a bit of uncertainty. This comet has never been grazed by the Sun's heat, according to official reports. The outgasing could be more intense then anticipated. The comet might explode, if there are neon gases present the tail "could" glow with extreme proximity to the Suns energy. The outgasing stage, when the comet is at it's hottest section of orbit, could be very interesting and is entirely unpredictable to some degree. |
