Convicted TSA Officer Reveals Secrets of Thefts at Airports
A convicted TSA security officer says he was part of a "culture" of indifference that allowed corrupt employees to prey on passengers' luggage and personal belongings with impunity, thanks to lax oversight and tip-offs from TSA colleagues.

"It was very commonplace, very," said Pythias Brown, a former TSA officer at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey who admits he stole more than $800,000 worth of items from luggage and security checkpoints over a four-year period.

"It was very convenient to steal," he said.

Speaking publicly for the first time after being released from prison, Brown told ABC News his four-year-long crime spree came to an end only because he tried to sell a camera he stole from the luggage of a CNN producer on E-bay but forgot to remove all of the news networks' identifying stickers.

"It became so easy, I got complacent," Brown said.

Brown is one of almost 400 TSA officers who have been fired for stealing from passengers in the past decade. According to the TSA, 381 TSA officers have been fired for theft between 2003 and 2012, including 11 so far in this year.

US Airline Passengers Claim TSA Ignoring Their Theft Reports

Hundreds of air passengers reacted following an ABC News investigation into theft by uniformed employees of the federal agency in charge of airport security, some saying they were victims of theft and were ignored by Transportation Security Administration officials.

Rep. John Mica (R-Florida), the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, called Friday for "a total reform and complete overhaul" of the TSA.

The ABC News report, which included footage of a TSA officer who appeared to have taken an iPad left behind on purpose at the Orlando airport, "is another eye-opening example of how this bloated security agency cannot properly recruit, train and oversee a ballooning 65,000 person workforce," said Mica.

Travelers In Greater Houston React To Report Of TSA Thefts

Jeff Garnand was also flying to Atlanta. He has not been so fortunate.

“Three weeks ago, coming through this airport, I had an iPad that disappeared in the suitcase that was checked. You have to pack it inside all the clothes to protect the iPad, but it was gone.”

It’s not the first time Garnand experienced that. A frequent traveler, he said he alerted airport officials so he could check his 9 millimeter gun. That didn’t make it to his final destination either.”

He learned his lesson: to not pack anything valuable in checked bags.

A sensible thing would be if you are visiting a friend/family domestically or overseas box up and POST YOUR STUFF a week before you leave and send it to where you are going.
When returning home, box it all up again on the last day, keep out what you are wearing home and send the rest back to your own address.

I hate taking bags when I travel and do this all the time and just take carry on luggage.

The only time you can't do it is if you are going on holiday at a destination where you don't know anybody.

It's simple really.

Yep, NEVER put something into checked luggage that you "can't live without"! My Nook and cell phone stay in my purse, and all cameras, laptops & electronic goodies go into the carry-on, which I try to check thoroughly before leaving the security area.

Last trip out of Philadelphia, I did end up losing HALF of the power cord to my laptop, but figure I got away lightly - it was easily replaced at the next Best Buy. And, no, I didn't bother reporting it. They don't care and it wasn't worth the heartburn it would've cost me.

I like the tie straps idea!

Here is a comment that I read that goes a step further with the use of "zip ties"--

"I've used zip ties for several years. I fly out of Oregon and I hand extra zip ties to the TSA inspectors and ask them to re-lock the bag if they need to open it. They've always re-locked the bag.
How do I know. I use one color when I lock it (yellow) and then hand the inspectors a different color (green)."

These guys are supposed to be there to stop terrorists and their weapons from getting on a plane...

If they will steal to the extent that they are -- why would we assume they cannot be easily bought by those same terrorists to look the other way?

At this point, the TSA is nothing more than organized crime in the purest sense. They are an organization, involved in crime....

They need to be disbanded before it is too late.

FWIW, I am... or was up until a few months ago, the frequent flyers of frequent flyers -- hold platinum status on two airlines and have enough frequent flyer miles to last a life-time. But I was so tired after flying... dealing with the TSA and the crowded planes and terminals - that I started driving.... it takes me a few hours more each week -- but the drive is so much nicer -- and less stressful.

They steal because it's easy, and these days, most punishments are just a slap on the wrist.

Although, the TSA agent who blamed his wife for the theft, was fired. Wonder what he will do now.

I guess the temptation becomes too much for them. It's a little like spending every day in the candy store. Monitor cameras would be a good idea. Since we are getting exposed in every sense of the word, when we travel. The people searching us should be monitored. I got to the destination I was traveling to and missing the tea strainer I had put in my tea cannister. What a pain, and totally worthless to anyone but me. I had to strain my tea through a coffee maker. Totally frustrating. But I'm sure that TSA guy didn't sell that on ebay. My Jason Winters Tea was just as good, but what a drag.tomato
