Overflowing rivers were powerful enough to upend cars, and forced hundreds of people to flee the area. A woman in her eighties died when floodwater struck her home in Alora, north of Malaga, a regional spokesperson said. In the Murcia region, flooding killed a girl aged nine or ten, according to different reports, along with two other people. Local authorities reported that at least 600 residents of the Andalusia region were forced to leave their homes. Rescue workers used boats to evacuate those trapped in their homes by the elements. The provinces of Malaga and Almeria, both popular tourists destinations, were among those hit hardest by the disaster. Torrential downpours and a thunderstorm resulted in around 24.5 centimeters of rainfall in the region on Friday morning, Spain’s weather agency reported. Floodwaters damaged infrastructure, closed roads including two major highways and drowned farmland. Electricity and mobile phone services were unavailable in some of the affected areas. In Murcia, a highway bridge collapsed during the rain. Regional authorities said the rains appeared to be lessening and shifting eastward, but are expected to continue throughout the weekend. The flooding came after months of drought in the country, which triggered thousands of wildfires. The summer droughts left much of the ground too hard to soak up water, worsening the floods. Back Updated: Saturday, 29 September, 2012 at 04:05 UTC Description Heavy rains in southern Spain have caused flash floods that killed at least five people on Friday, as rivers burst their banks, swept away cars and swamped homes, according to media reports. Torrential downpours in southern Spain have caused flash floods that killed five people, including two children, swamped homes and swept cars down roads that were transformed into raging rivers. Spanish National radio said the bodies of a young boy and a girl were found drowned in a car in the southeastern town of Puerto Lumbreras. An elderly man also was found dead near the town’s cemetery, the radio station said. Earlier, an official in the southern town of Alora said homes were destroyed and a woman killed in the rains. Rescue workers are searching to determine if there are more victims. She did not have more details and spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with town policy. The private news agency Europa Press said a man also was found dead in the southeastern town of Vera Playa, which had been cut off by the floods. Images in Spanish media showed wrecked cars carried away by flash floods, rivers overflowing their banks and people sweeping muddy water out of their homes. The heavy rains started early Friday morning throughout Spain. The hardest hit areas were the Mediterranean provinces of Malaga in the south and Murcia and Almeria in the southeast. The floods came after months of virtual drought and soaring summer temperatures all over Spain that helped trigger tens of thousands of wildfires. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |
