I want to clone my dog ... am I evil?
I know there are good arguments made:

"The clone is not the same animal so why waste the money?"

"There are so many homeless pets, why not adopt one?"

"The female dog used to gestate the clone is thrown out afterward."

So, how about this:

I promise to adopt TWO dogs from the local shelter.
I promise to adopt the "MOTHER" dog.

They will all live happily with me and my dog's clone. As for the clone not being the same dog, of course I know that but I want to clone him and let the clone father pups which will be like my dog's pups. The next generation.

Now am I still evil?

No, but your dog is. It has secretly been transmitting this desire to you in your sleep so that you think it's your will but it's actually the dog's. It's trying to achieve immortality through you. It's possessed by a lesser devil.

Don't adopt two dogs because of duty or a sense of guilt. It was never your responsibility nor a problem you even started or caused, so no need for you to fix the issue.

As for cloning? It is your money and your desire and it is nobodies business if you do clone your dog. If it makes you happy create your own Duncan Idaho.

HAHA! So funny!

It's those really cute eyes looking at you with unconditional love...

I have a goldie who does it all the time to get pets and doggie cookies.

What kind of dog do you have?

Hey thanks for saying that. I do feel badly about all the unwanted dogs out there and it breaks my heart to visit a shelter, so I guess it would be a mixture of duty and love.

Who's Duncan Idaho?

Even with identical DNA structure, there's still variability. Know that a clone may not look the same - coloration and markings could be different. And it may not have the same personality/temperament.

So why go through all the hassle and expense when picking a pup would give you much greater certainty for the looks and personality you're trying to match?

Yes! They kind of lock onto you and you become helpless in their power.

My guy is a longhair chiahuahua.

He's very unique looking (and beautiful to me) but his personality is warped due to his early life before I adopted him. He was given up for adoption for being aggressive. He's got a loving heart, but he lashes out randomly.

I would raise his "child" to be the happy dog he never could be. And also to have his pups he didn't get a chance to have because the adoption agency required neutering (I don't disagree with that as a policy ... but in this case I regret it).

Having kids is our way of being immortal and if he could've fathered a pup I'd probably be ok saying "goodbye" to him but as is it is unbearable.

Thanks for your nice reply.

Those are good questions.

I actually feel a bond with this dog like one you'd have with a child. If your child dies you're not going to just replace it with another whose looks and personality match. I've had many pets over the years. I love them all, and I cry for the loss of each one. But this guy is different.

I had this kind of bond once before, with one particular cat. I know it sounds weird but it's almost spiritual. She died many years ago before cloning was possible, but I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could bring her back.

Ok, yes, there's a contradiction in my thinking. A clone only gets me the surface characteristics so why am I talking about spiritual bonds?

Hm ... something to ponder ...

HA! Have you ever seen the Disney movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua? It's the cutest kid movie. I liked the part when tons of Chihuahuas took over the Mexican ancient ruins. Such a wonderfully funny dog movie.

Yes, loved it! Though I have to admit I love all dog movies, I must say. Remember the one about a golden playing basketball? :) My brother-and-sister-in-law have had goldens for years and it's a wonderful breed. My chihuahua actually looks like a tiny golden so I tell people I put him in the dryer and he shrank!

Duncan was a mentat, a biological human computer in the service of house Atreides in the Dune series. Mentats were fully human with incredible computation and logic skills.

Duncan was later in the service of Of the God emperor a child descendant of Paul Atreides, in the form of a clone. Duncan was given to him for service as a gift. Every sixty years he would realize he had lived before, many times in the past and would have to be destroyed.

Thanks for saying that.

Smiley

What gets me is that over the eons humans have bred dogs for so many different sizes, shapes, and abilities, but no one has bred a dog to LIVE LONGER. What's with that?

Seems like they could do this by breeding only older dogs. In humans it's been noted that age of menopause correlates with lifespan, so if dogs are the same then two older dogs who can still successfully breed would be more likely to produce offspring with long lives. And so on down through the generations til you have a dog that maybe could live to be 30? That would be wonderful.

Ha ha, don't think it hasn't occurred to me.

At my age (going on 62) I find myself as well as my friends and relatives my age, we're all thinking more about end of life. One guy I know calculates his remaining time on earth in terms of how many more dogs he will have. "Is this my last dog?"

I remember my father losing his dog. He was about 82 at the time and it really tore him up. He would show me that dog's grave every time I visited.

Ah ... so some kind of memory transferred into the clone.

So if you could clone yourself, would you do it?

That's a good one. I despise letting go.

Letting go feels treasonous, callous evil. Letting go means forgeting, moving on.

Leaving them behind, meowing for you on the shoreline while the river sweeps your boat forward.
