$12.00 hr vs Unemployment, Welfare check, Food Stamps Card, and you don't have to get up in the morning?

Living off the state may look like a better career.

I am so sick and tired of the top 4 people at any company or corp. making 1000sands of times MORE than all the rest of the people that work there. GREED has made this world collapse and it will never stop now. HOW do these people actually go to work each and stare the other employees in the face? Say HI to the doorman and say HI to the single mom's working their asses off in those cubicles? The mail room people and most EVERYONE else THERE! HOW DO THEY DO IT? No going back now...this won't STAND...nope it will all fall DUE to these GREEDY BASTARDS! Just a matter of time now. No wonder no one wants your $12.00 an hour shovel job...it sucks is why. Don't be so polly anna...you know it sucks too.Idol1

Have you ever started a business? I run one. I have one employee. I started the biz in college, worked several shit jobs for years to funnel capital into it. My employee, albeit a great worker, does not have nearly the time..much less the funds..invested that I do. Are you suggesting we should make the same wage?

Top earners in most companies are founders or highler level execs. Rewarding entrepreneurism is the basis of capitalism. If it were easy to start a biz everyone would be doing it.

ZERO. Just sayin.
 Quoting: Justalittlebad

JLB, let me ask you a question or several for that matter...

1. Can you...Feed, clothe, shelter yourself(1 person) on $12 an hour in today's economy?

2. How about 2 persons, say elderly around 60-64 yrs old

3. How about 3 persons(add wife and kid)

can you do so without any Government assistance?

then add transportation and all that goes with it(taxes, tag, insurance, fuel, tires and maintenance)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24631080

Yes you can. You just won't be able to purchase iPods, iPhones, 100's of cable channels, fancy cars, etc. I did it for years as a single parent with zero child support making less than $12.00 per hour.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22872667

$12 an hour. Lets say they keep 70%. That's less than $1400 net each month.

So you get to live in a shitty apartment and stay home every night.

Quit comparing the wage to some fantasy that you have about life.

I'm not saying $12 is a bad wage, but its not great.

Do you need skills? Are you sure no one applied or did the HR people tell you that? Sometimes HR will say that cause no one they want ou to hire applied or they're interviewing for another job.

Just sayin'
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9106140

First off, $12. is the starting wage. With in a year it could go to $20.

It is a starting position for a shovel operator.

Twit. No one should be able to raise a family at this skill level. Two or three young men making this amount could, however, rent a house, have a phone, and a TV, and pay utilities easily--if they didn't party it all away. Then as their knowledge and skills developed, they could work their way up the ladder of success. You Liberal Twits want everybody to get equal pay starting at graduation from High School. Idiot.

Are you telling me $34,293.60 a year will not provide a living wage? AND this number is based on $12. for the entire year.
 Quoting: Justalittlebad

I could live off that If i were single.

People are spoiled though.

Ya you have to account for taxes, insurance, gas and food.

But people also want their luxury.

It would be easy to live off that in Texas, $500 1 room apartments are a dime a dozen. As long as you dont have an expensive car note or $200 cell phone plans that is easily doable.

Now if you have children, or are married and your spouse doesnt work then there is problems.

Still $12 is kind of low for a heavy machine operator.

OP came in here expecting a pat on the back for being a good hard working American - only to find everyone here is awake and realizes these shitting wages and driving inflation are forcing people to go to benefits.

Stop hoarding money for your 5 houses you pig, double that wage. Here in the UK you'd get way over double for machine operator.

I seriously dont get why yanks think they are living in the golden country-my fuel costs about 6 bucks a gallon us,my rents 400 a week but I still get a decent living regardless

of course we get paid a decent wage mind you, a teenager at mcdonalds gets 16 an hr- I get 42 an hour fitting towbars

I'm not a millionaire by any means- but I have a house almost paid off, work 38 hrs a week, got a nice car and a boat (and get time to actually use it)

Oh and I recently had a suspect tumor that they suspected was cancer- within a month had it tested, confirmed non malignant (thank the flying spaghetti monster), was cut out and it all up cost me 150 bucks

I hear of people being bankrupted by medical costs in the states and I seriously wonder- why the fuckin hell does anyone actually choose to live there- my experience from media and online over the last twenty years is that you have to be insane to actually want to live or work there....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17734644

most people can't get away. Australia doesn't want us. Yes our medical is the most expensive in the world. Care is 33 according to the WHO. Our food has GMO in most of it. 42 an hour - even engineers dont make that here. Depressing.

Are you kidding me? You find a roommate! That's how you save! even if the roommate bails you can get a single for $500/month : $6,000/year meaning you only add $2,820 to your yearly total! so that's $12,320/year in expenses and still around 8k left for whatever else you want to do with it! Still extremely comfortable!

I posted a part time teaching jobs on Craigs List and in 2 days I had over 100 Emails... had to remove the ad.

We were paying $25 hr... part time teaching.

Many were teachers who could not make ends meet.

America is hurting!

I used to do day to day construction work, 8 years ago. That started at $18 (for clean up crew, or landscaping). Shovel operators are coming in way higher than that. Those wages, have gone up I'm sure.

Hell I'm even making more in film, than I would back home.
