Please feel free to answer the questions...post the cost of a apartment(low rent) or just a "room" for that matter in your area....then the cost of a gallon of gas....etc...

Twit. No one should be able to raise a family at this skill level. Two or three young men making this amount could, however, rent a house, have a phone, and a TV, and pay utilities easily--if they didn't party it all away. Then as their knowledge and skills developed, they could work their way up the ladder of success. You Liberal Twits want everybody to get equal pay starting at graduation from High School. Idiot.

I would like to point out that if minimum wage were adjusted for inflation since inception it would today be $15.75 an hour. I find that ironic because when minimum wage was concieved it was meant to be a minimum living wage and many men supported a family on that minimum wage. What would it take today to effectively support a family today? Interestingly about $15-$16 an hour.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24631080

No, I built it from nothing.
 Quoting: Justalittlebad

I'm sure you charged like $10 to $15 per hour building your company....NOT.
$12/hr isn't bad to start if you're 18 years old with zero experience. You teach em' and in a few years he/she's at a living wage of $25 - $35 per hour.

We've been told to work hard and climb that ladder. My starting wage 35 years ago was $12/hr. The union scale is now at about $48 - $55 per hour when you add in the benefits. Now they say there's no work and that we need to start over at the new normal living wage of $12 per hour. Meanwhile you're charging $60 to $80 per hour and if you're not then you're a fool.

Why isn't your ad for an experienced operator at $30 to $40?

You need to pay a person a LIVING WAGE! And if you want a good worker to stay around and be loyal you need to reward them with pay increases and benefits.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH:
Alan Isaacman
The People Vs Larry Flynt
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you've heard a lot here today and I won't try to go back over it all. But you have to go back in that room and make some decisions and there is one thing I want to make very clear to you before you do. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like what Larry Flynt does. I don't like what he does. But what I do like is... that I live in a country... where you and I can make that decision for ourselves. I like that I live in a country where I can pick up Hustler magazine... read it if I want... or throw it in the trash, if that's where I think it belongs. Or better yet I can express my opinion by not buying it. I like that right. I care about it. And you should care about it, too... because we live in a free country. We say that a lot, but sometimes we forget what that means, so listen again. We live in a free country. That is a powerful idea. That's a magnificent way to live. But there is a price for that freedom, which is that sometimes... we have to tolerate things that we don't necessarily like. So go back in that room... where you are free to think whatever you want to think... about Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine. But then ask yourselves if you want to make that decision for the rest of us... because the freedom that everyone in this room enjoys... is, in a very real way, in your hands. If we start throwing up walls against what some of us think is obscene... we may wake up one morning and realize... that walls have been thrown upin places we never expected... and we can't see anythingor... do anything. And that's not freedom. That is not freedom. So, be careful. Thank you."

$12 is a good starting pay for entry level positions

Why is everyone beating up the OP

He cannot change the economic situation we are all in

My company starts new hires at $10 and we give $1 raises monthly

Its hard to imagine living off of $12 an hour but I used to do it and worked hard to make more

$12.00 per hour wouldn't be that bad if OP would provide room and board and pay cash. Just saying. But too often employers forget that $12.00 per hour doesn't pay for an apartment or anything else for that matter. After you factor in the cost of going to and from work, wear and tear on car, cost of clothes, medical insurance, lunch (that's if you can afford to eat lunch), after doing a basic coast analysis, it makes more sense to stay at home or in the homeless camp...

This thread is making me sick. All you people claiming you cant live off 12 bucks an hour are either trolling or are some self important entitlement basement dwellers. You dont start out a job making tons of money, you work your way up and businesses dont "owe" you a fucking thing when you start. Just because it doesnt live up to what your opinion of a "living wage" is doesnt mean thats reality. Now maybe 12 bucks an hour where you live isnt, but where op lives its probably pretty decent. Here in arkansas at the company i work for we start people out at 10 bucks or less at times depending on position. Hell i started 15 years ago there making 5.25 per hour. Weve got people there now who have been there 7 plus years and are just making 12 per hour and are living just fine, new cars, houses, etc. all just depends on where you are as far as a "living wage" goes

Minimum you should be paying a guy to shovel all day for you is $20, unless we are talking wetbacks.

Nobody in their right mind is going to shovel all day and take home less than $100.

"Its hard to imagine living off of $12 an hour but I used to do it and worked hard to make more

OP, good for you and don't let GLP get you down"

Yeah, I used to live off of $12.00 an hour back in 1995, when most jobs around the Austin area were paying $8.00. I was also married and didn't have to worry. I also drove 52 miles to and from work when gas was just under 90 cents a gallon. So don't don't give me this "I used to do it" crap...Inflation has made it almost impossible for workers making less than $15.00 per hour to feed their families and to live in a decent apartment.

Back in the day, an employer would provide housing, food, and it wasn't uncommon for an employee to work themselves up through the company ranks. Companies were stable and didn't cull employees when their stock took a hit. There was something called "Loyalty" that existed between employer and employee. It's not like that any more. Companies will often let employees go after a couple of years (rift) then re-hire lower cost employees in order to keep their stock holders happy. What we are witnessing is the ugly side of capitalism. That's why, I believe there is a move among some in the US society to favor socialism.

Re: I have a job posting w/ the Texas Work Force Commission starting @ $12. an hr. Guess how applications I have gotten.
That doesn't sound like a bad job. Here's some perspective for you:

I am a U.S. military pilot with 6 years of flight experience. If you add up the hours I work per week between briefing, preflighting, flying, post flight, paperwork and miscellaneous collateral duties...

My pay averages out to $18 an hour. Before taxes.

So that $12 an hour job? I was in the military for 6 years before I made more than that. I've been in for 11 now.

So a job where people aren't trying to kill you and you make more than half the people in the military and you can be home with your wife and kids every night and your hours are set 9 to 5 and you don't have to work weekends or sleep on a couch at the squadron because you're so undermanned that you have to cover other people's jobs too? Sign me the fuck up.

My neighbor is on food stamps and disability. That mother fucker eats better than I do. I come home at 1am from working 80 hour work weeks and that mother fucker is sitting in his lawn chair drinking beer and smoking weed all day. Where the fuck to I sign up for that program?

Oh and for what it's worth...that $770 billion for the defense budget every year? Fuck me if I know where it goes...we get paid shit, every plane I have ever flown in the last 6 years was built between 1968 - 1991 and the only bathroom at my workplace has a hole busted in the wall, both urinals wrapped in trash bags and piss and shit water running out the bottom of the toilets and all over the floor.

This is the state of our country: crooks and the criminally lazy are rewarded more for their efforts than people who work full time jobs or risk their lives and the country is going bankrupt supporting this kind of shit. Meanwhile my work hours keep increasing as the average person has to work longer and longer hours to sustain the unsustainable. I'm about to be divorced for the second time and I'm not even 30...mostly because I'm never home...I'm either in a foreign country having pot shots taken at me or when I am home I'm having to sleep on the couch at work because the military is stretched so thin that the only solution at this point is to use people to the point of exhaustion to make up for lack of working equipment, manpower and money.

You only hear about SpecOps when they go wrong.
