ZERO. Just sayin.
 Quoting: Justalittlebad

I was making 13 an hour at my job when it went under .

I couldn't find work for 3 years, had to settle for a 10 an hr job.

Sad thing is when looking for work, you find discrimination.
Many of these people hiring now are minorities. They are only hire other minorities for the better paying jobs.

The only jobs that even offered interviews with me was white people.

To many Mexicans as bosses now.

respectable offer?? It's insulting especially to a skilled trained shovel operator. Perhaps thats why noone applied.

OP too busy thinking about his profits. bottom line.

Post the job at $20/hr and you'll see people start applying.

That doesn't sound like a bad job. Here's some perspective for you:

I am a U.S. military pilot with 6 years of flight experience. If you add up the hours I work per week between briefing, preflighting, flying, post flight, paperwork and miscellaneous collateral duties...

My pay averages out to $18 an hour. Before taxes.

So that $12 an hour job? I was in the military for 6 years before I made more than that. I've been in for 11 now.

So a job where people aren't trying to kill you and you make more than half the people in the military and you can be home with your wife and kids every night and your hours are set 9 to 5 and you don't have to work weekends or sleep on a couch at the squadron because you're so undermanned that you have to cover other people's jobs too? Sign me the fuck up.

My neighbor is on food stamps and disability. That mother fucker eats better than I do. I come home at 1am from working 80 hour work weeks and that mother fucker is sitting in his lawn chair drinking beer and smoking weed all day. Where the fuck to I sign up for that program?

Oh and for what it's worth...that $770 billion for the defense budget every year? Fuck me if I know where it goes...we get paid shit, every plane I have ever flown in the last 6 years was built between 1968 - 1991 and the only bathroom at my workplace has a hole busted in the wall, both urinals wrapped in trash bags and piss and shit water running out the bottom of the toilets and all over the floor.

This is the state of our country: crooks and the criminally lazy are rewarded more for their efforts than people who work full time jobs or risk their lives and the country is going bankrupt supporting this kind of shit. Meanwhile my work hours keep increasing as the average person has to work longer and longer hours to sustain the unsustainable. I'm about to be divorced for the second time and I'm not even 30...mostly because I'm never home...I'm either in a foreign country having pot shots taken at me or when I am home I'm having to sleep on the couch at work because the military is stretched so thin that the only solution at this point is to use people to the point of exhaustion to make up for lack of working equipment, manpower and money.

$12 an hour to dig holes is pretty good. I've lived off that with my wife (who doesn't work) and my son and I've always been able to pay $550 a month for rent and $150 for electricity, plus $100 for insurance and never run out of gas in either car or not have steak and potatoes to eat. We have cable and go out every weekend, but we don't have any debt or credit card bills so maybe thats what it is. Oh and my 2 cell phones cost me $40 a month both lines unlimited from ATT.

I'm in the mountain states and $12 x 50 hrs is actually working poor once you deduct all the Soc Security, FICA, Medicare, etc + any health care you might offer (and deduct from the pay)and I'm basing that on a household of one or two people.
When these lame assed politicans say they're worried about the middle class, it means they are worried about people making $250,000 a year (THAT IS MIDDLE CLASS),not your future employee who'll gross about $29,000.
So you might think you're being generous at $12 per hr, but it's actually mediocre pay by today's standards and don't even start on the real inflation of 30% on fuel and food, 'cause the gov't never factors those things in when they post inflation stats.

$12/hour for a full time job at 50 hours a week?

If you offered that here nobody in the country would ever take that. In fact I think for where I live that's actually below the minimum wage for full time work. Not to mention that here, those sorts of jobs can often get paid double that per hour.

Bills are expensive as fuck these days, unless the US is an ultra cheap place to live I don't know how anybody with a partner or a family could justify working a $12/hour job.

$12 an hour. Lets say they keep 70%. That's less than $1400 net each month.

So you get to live in a shitty apartment and stay home every night.

Quit comparing the wage to some fantasy that you have about life.

I'm not saying $12 is a bad wage, but its not great.

Do you need skills? Are you sure no one applied or did the HR people tell you that? Sometimes HR will say that cause no one they want ou to hire applied or they're interviewing for another job.

Just sayin'

First off, $12. is the starting wage. With in a year it could go to $20.

It is a starting position for a shovel operator.
 Quoting: Justalittlebad

I run my own business also.

It ( $12 hr )is a good wage for a starting pay for an honest days work. Heck I still dig my footings by hand and hire people at $12 hr to help me. Hard to find people today that will do manual labor .

Better than working at Mcdonalds and having to deal with obese loud mouth bitchy customers for $10hr

If by working poor you mean an under 18yr old mcdonalds worker here- then that's about right...

But then most people aren't as underpaid as the normal us worker appears to be..

The complaining about `cheap off shore labour' seems a tad hypocritical, when it seems that most usa based workers dont get any more than most other countries, and a damn sight less than many others do- and they get a lot more in return to boot

I honestly think they didn't want me to have an opportunity to get his job because I had to apply for it at the TWC office in a predominantly black community, and I am white. Let's see......
$0 per hr VS. $12 per hr

I make $13.55 per hr, work 50+hrs per week
I am a single mom, get NO Child Support- pay all my bills and living expenses and that of a teenager as well!! (teens are so expensive!)
Yes I live with my Fiance', but we both have mortgages to pay, as I own a house of my own. and when its not being rented I pay (plus any and all repairs for it)!! I had to get a new/used vehicle this year as a Buck decided to murder my old one, I pay the monthly payments on that plus Full coverage Ins. I survive on my paycheck and have little left over- I budget budget budget!!! AND I DO WITHOUT!!!!

Seriously--people pay for luxuries they DO NOT NEED!!!! My cell phone is not and never will be fancy with all the unneeded crap--its a phone!! I use it to communicate with my daughter, to know where she is while I am at work. To call family and catch up on things--my computer is old, by todays standards--I use it for computer things..we have BASIC Cable/Internet. We really don't watch much on the globtube!
We don't go out much, as it is a luxury so we save up for it!
His kids and mine are in sports and music..there are always fundraisers for school- and we get by on our pay...

I will never get welfare again in my life (I had to a long long time ago and felt so completely shitty about myself, but I needed the medical, and found 3 temp jobs until I found a full time job to get off of it)

What the OP is offering is a JOB!!! Not WELFARE!!!
If a person is to good to roll up their sleeves and WORK then they DO NOT DESERVE MY HARD EARNED MONIES!!! I understand that there are times when one needs help-been there-but it should NEVER become a way of life! I am not young anymore and I should not have to work so damned hard for a living (at my age anyway)--BUT it sure as hell beats sitting on my ass sucking up someone else's hard eard monies!

I want for nothing in my life-I have helped my older children with finances-I pay for the things my youngest needs and wants--I have a place to live(its NOTHING SPECIAL, just an old house)--I drive a used vehicle, but it runs and I keep it maintained to keep it running!!--my home decor is things our kids have made at school and other places, our TV's are old but work--we have FOOD to eat (and I can make hamburger and chicken a million different ways!)--we all have clean clothes to wear, sometimes even brand new!--we play boardgames, cards, the kids ride bikes or walk (ok I am teaching my teenager to drive- so I pray no more deer cross the road while she is driving!!)--they have friends, we have friends, so everyone has social entertainment outside of our little home!!

Seriously if people quit thinking they NEED the luxury condos, houses etc...the newest gadgets of cell phones and computers....the newest vehicles out there.. the latest fashions ETC....... lived within their means....I know I know I am a tad crazy for saying that BUT-- and the biggest thing PEOPLE NEED TO DO IS-------BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT THEY HAVE, right there infront of their ego-centered lives!! STOP crying about what others have over themselves! If you want something you do not need, find an HONEST way to get it--like save up for it! My kids had to have jobs before they got cell phones and pay their share of the bill...including my youngest (babysitting extra chores, as the laws have changed for teens working and teen driving), they also had to pay for the increase in my insurance to drive! My youngest can't wait to be fully licensed so she can get a job! and She already has a plan for her income--
goes like this

First part of her check goes to pay for--car insurance and cell phone
What is left over is split 3 ways
1. into her savings account for college and car
2. into her checking account for emergencies
3. into her pocket for spending monies

She wants to borrow money from her savings to buy her car and pay it back monthly when she gets a job.

She just turned 16 and she had this plan for herself 2yrs ago.

BE GRATEFUL IF YOU HAVE A JOB, no matter how crappy it may seem, BUDGET, its ok to NOT have the latest and greatest gadget!! If you are taking care of your family! Kids grow up and discover that they survived NOT having a bunch of crap!! My oldest and I just laughed about FURBIES yesterday, and how she and her sister wanted one so BAD and I would not get them one! Now she can't even remember what was so flippen great about a Furby!

Toys get broken or lost--LOVE LAST FOREVER!

I seriously dont get why yanks think they are living in the golden country-my fuel costs about 6 bucks a gallon us,my rents 400 a week but I still get a decent living regardless

of course we get paid a decent wage mind you, a teenager at mcdonalds gets 16 an hr- I get 42 an hour fitting towbars

I'm not a millionaire by any means- but I have a house almost paid off, work 38 hrs a week, got a nice car and a boat (and get time to actually use it)

Oh and I recently had a suspect tumor that they suspected was cancer- within a month had it tested, confirmed non malignant (thank the flying spaghetti monster), was cut out and it all up cost me 150 bucks

I hear of people being bankrupted by medical costs in the states and I seriously wonder- why the fuckin hell does anyone actually choose to live there- my experience from media and online over the last twenty years is that you have to be insane to actually want to live or work there....

funnily enough thats about when I started my apprenticeship

I got a whole 92 bucks a week back then!!!

but then super cost 32c a litre (thats gas to you yanks)

its now 1.52 a litre

so just let us use that as a scale for `the same' cost of living

as a first year apprentice I would be getting $437 a week

hmmm

so lets use ciggies as a basis instead....

a pack of drum cost me $8
now its 38 a pack...

funnily enough- that works out I would be earning 437 a week

so really- using both of those as a baseline- a first year apprentice should be earning at least 437 a week- just to be exactly the same earning potential as I was back in the 80's

thats 11.50 an hour for a first year apprentice...

I find this arrogant attitude one of most american (us citizens that is) least endearing qualities...

So what 11360402- would be your solution???
let em starve? or maybe a good old `culling' would be more to your taste...

Has it ever crossed your mind that may- just maybe- your excessive crime rate would drop if people were not left to starve on the streets?

(Do you know that in New York City alone- there are more homeless people than live in the largest city in Australia??)

go back to see the list of countries that have a higher crime rate index than the usa...

all 3 of them...

Our 'excessive' crime rate has little to do with poverty, friend, and a lot to do with an enabled [by welfare and social services], dysfunctional, and violent subculture.

And almost all that 'excessive' violence you refer to occurs in guess where? Do you think the average American town, suburb, rural area, or even many urban neighborhoods are the wild west? No, they aren't.

And please don't forget the U.S. has the 3rd largest population of any country on Earth, and is geographically the 3rd largest nation. In other-words, IT'S A BIG AND VERY DIVERSE COUNTRY.

Actually I am getting ready to load my ass into my truck and drive about 500 miles to start work on Monday. Leech? I own it.

Youu are a leech. A company owner that pays his employees just enough to get by, sounds like a real gem of a company keep up the hard work. 500 miles seems like all that hard work is paying off. Moran

This person is a troll. No one in their right mind says this kind of thing without an agenda or brain damage.

NYC is one of the biggest cities and metro areas ON EARTH! The city alone has over 8 million people, metro area is 19-21 million people, depending how it's counted.

And it doesn't have more homeless people than the population of Sydney.

what that list showed was that despite the size, 1st or 3rd world country status, median income..

the usa is the 3rd most crime ridden country to live in in the entire world....

JLB, let me ask you a question or several for that matter...

1. Can you...Feed, clothe, shelter yourself(1 person) on $12 an hour in today's economy?

2. How about 2 persons, say elderly around 60-64 yrs old

3. How about 3 persons(add wife and kid)

can you do so without any Government assistance?

then add transportation and all that goes with it(taxes, tag, insurance, fuel, tires and maintenance)

Actually I apologize- the 2 million wasn't for homeless people on the street, it was for people fed at homeless shelters

In New York City...
• Each night more than 50,000 people -- including more than 19,000 children -- experience homelessness.
• Currently 45,300 homeless men, women, and children bed down each night in the municipal shelter system.
• Additionally, more than 5,000 homeless adults and children sleep each night in other public shelters, and thousands more sleep rough on the streets or in other public spaces.

That's more than double the number of people that live in my entire city- homeless and living on the streets every night (and that's the official figures...)
