Big U.S. Fleet Nears Disputed Islands, But What For?
September 30, 20127\
TOKYO – It’s probably just a coincidence; no need to worry yet. But the U.S. has quietly assembled a powerful air, land and sea armada not far from where Japan and China are squaring off over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

Two Navy aircraft carrier battle groups and a Marine Corps air-ground task force have begun operating in the Western Pacific, within easy reach of the Senkaku Islands. That’s where Japanese and Chinese patrol boats are engaged in an increasingly tense standoff.

Chinese vessels have repeatedly entered territorial waters around the small islands in recent weeks and Coast Guard vessels from Japan and Taiwan fired water cannons at each other last week. The islands are controlled and administered by Japan, but claimed by both China and Taiwan.

Carrier groups and Marine task forces often operate alone, so the convergence of the three groups in a relatively small part of the Pacific represents an unusual concentration of firepower. All three are fresh from training exercises in and around Guam. Those exercises included live-fire with missiles and joint beach landings by U.S. Marines and Japanese ground troops.

Lovely, we really need to stay out of this idiotic dispute. Give the leaders of Japan and China a cage to fight it out in, last man standing gets to claim the islands. Meanwhile make it pay per view and pay off some of the debt.

None of our boys need to die over this ego filled "face saving" crotch grabbing nonsense.

Now if only China would impose export sanctions... We'd see full employment damn fast as American workers jobs got rapidly unoffshored.

I have been promoting this idea for a looong time.

If one nations leaders have beef with another nations leaders, have them fight it out one on one in a bare-fisted, no-holds-barred duel of choice. Though it does twitch my "Fall of the roman empire" sense, the worldwide problem, is that it is worldwide. Petty bickering and schoolyard insults carried out by unwitting servants while the instigators watch from the safety of their livingrooms.

It truly is a microcosm concern taking macrocosm form.

Japan has no navy... no military. The USA guarantees their protection. As much as I would enjoy a good cage fight, it would not be Japan in the cage with China.

We need to end this before it starts... if someone does something stupid and this blws... it will be the USA vs. China with Japan in the middle.

I got 50 cents says the US fleet is there for target practice -- and the Chinese will oblige by sinking every one of those ships in less than one hour.

If you ask me this incident seems contrived for some unknown reason. It is a cover for something else. It is true that China and Japan have hard feelings over WW2 and the Raping of Nanking. However, Japan and China do a lot of trade with one another. In fact, they used this entire incident to explain away Toyota's bad numbers and 60% decrease in sales to China and it had only just occurred a week before.

Perhaps the Mariana trench is getting ready to cave in so the U.S. Fleet had to evacuate. Who the hell knows?

Japan has a huge military. How effective it is would be another discussion. Its constitution restricts it to being a "Self Defence Force" but don't be misled to thinking Japan has no army.

Sorry but this is just wrong. Japan absolutely has a military but they are called a security force. The difference is they don't have offensive capabilities like bombers and ICBM's. The US is stil required to render assistance though if they are attacked.

China will not have 4 more carriers built by 2013. The first one will be ready for sea trials (supposedly) in 2013. They haven't even laid the keel on atleast 2 of the ships.

Those islands have long been considered Japanese territory. Even Chinese maps have shown them as such.

Are we to let China be belligerent toward our long time allies?
