Outsourcing of Jobs in North America: What is being done to stop it?
Everyone said that the future of work...the next evolution of work for the middle class...would be "information" type jobs...anything done at a desk or computer, generally speaking. This was the employment pattern that was supposed to keep us all in good jobs for the rest of our lives (although, I remember in high school that it was admitted that a person would probably jump around between numerous different "careers" during their working life, and not just stick with one job).

But the downside of these information type jobs is that...if it can be done over the internet...it WILL eventually be outsourced to somewhere where they can do it cheaper. That's capitalism, and just common sense for anyone doing business.

Fair enough. But what this has done is to suck out the heart of information type jobs, so that the pay scale starts floating towards the lowest common demoninator for who will do that work.

Case in point: I had over ten years of experience in web site design and various forms of web programming. Yet I see job descriptions today asking for these skills, at a level that took me a decade to master, for jobs that only pay MINIMUM WAGE. This is because of that downward pressure on wages that the outsourcing of tech jobs creates.

(I know that you can find tech jobs that pay more then this of course...but still, this downward pressure on wages remains).

Compare all this to jobs that can never be outsourced...such as a building janitor. These jobs have more job security, and a higher starting wage, as a result.

I think outsourcing is KILLING the north american enconomy. I don't think it is the job (or would be in any way enforceable) for the public to voluntarily stop outsourcing...this is just not gonna happen. It's the job of politicians, the guys we elect, to do this work for us, and to set up tarrifs, etc. Yet what has really been done to stop this? Are the two leading candidates in the US election talking out the outsourcing issue, or are they just talking about "creating more jobs", which sort of skirts around the root issue? Are their laws in place now to encourage the use of north american information workers, as opposed to just hiring the cheapest source on the web?

Please let me know what is being done, because it seems like no real work is being done to address this issue. The politicians are keeping the large companies happy (as they save money outsourcing), and are letting the little guy (who just happened to elect them...) get screwed. Why are we not in the streets about this?!?

Re: Outsourcing of Jobs in North America: What is being done to stop it?
The method Republicans have used to block all jobs legislation in the past two years is the same. A jobs bill comes up, it is filled with positive things for the economy, Republicans filibuster debate, this shields them from having to make floor speeches on why they don't want tax breaks for small businesses... etc.

Why? Well, if the economy recovers too strongly before an election, Republicans will lose power. If jobs numbers look too good, people will want to keep the same party. By Republicans blocking all jobs legislation and keeping jobs numbers from improving they believe this is their ticket to power.

In other words, if you and other Americans suffer just long enough it will pay off for Republicans.

They sacrifice the citizens' jobs with the hopes that they will create more Republican jobs in Congress.

Why would one want to stop the outsourcing?

Anyways people in the usa need to expect lesser wadges. And we need to work on the budget deficit, before we can get jobs back home.

If you believe that people should be free to spend their money as they please, then you should have no problem with outsourcing. Also, if you want to stop outsourcing, don't buy foreign made products (I'm aware it's almost impossible at this point). The thing is, consumers like low prices as much as their employers they hate.

High taxes and high regulation lead to outsourcing. Things like minimum wage laws only destroy employment opportunities, since it's just another way to say "businesses shouldn't hire people unless they're worth $x an hour." Besides, even if we raised minimum wage, we'd all just pay more for goods and services. And if anyone thinks "well if we abolished minimum wage laws, our employers would pay us $0 an hour." Not true, because if it were, every job, regardless of what it is, would already pay minimum wage. But, as you see, there are plenty of jobs that pay more than minimum wage. Also include the fact that employers compete with each other for your labor/skills, so businesses will outbid each other for the best candidates.

What gives money value is the number of goods and services available to purchase. Money is merely a benchmark, like a ruler, to measure prosperity. Real wealth is tangible goods like land, computers, tvs, cars, etc. If the solution to all of our economic problems was as simple paying people more money, why even bother going to work? Why not just have central bankers print each person $100 billion so we can all retire? I have a $100 trillion bill from Zimbabwe and I can't buy anything with it.

I know it's hard to swallow, but in the western world we're going to have to start doing real work again. Much less shuffling of papers and a lot more factory production. I don't think the world will be stupid enough to accept our worthless USDs as a form of payment forever.

Another reason is this.

Nobody wants to get callouses on their hands nowadays. People look at you funny when you have dirt embedded in your hands.

Used to be folks would engineer things while they were physically building/repairing, Now it's a fat guy in an office somewhere that don't know which end of the hammer to use.

A job that used to take 2 good men takes 10 now.

AAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you propose punishing everyone that doesn't think like you? The VAST majority just want products that they can afford and it has nothing to do with a political statement or helping the economy. The only way that's done is producing things people want in other countries and if you can't compete price wise your done.

With the pampered and spoiled america do you think it would really work? Everybody wants the big bucks OR a hand out so my bet on that proposal is it's a MASSIVE FAIL!

How about just don't buy what ever is produce out of the country? BUY AMERICAN!

If this is true, then please tell me why Senator Reid refuses to allow any of the thirty plus Republican job bills sent to the Senate for consideration to even touch the Senate floor. He refuses to allow any Republican bill to be brought up for consideration. He will even cancel Democrats bills if it looks like it will not be passed.

You do realize that tariffs are just an increase for the price of goods sold by another country in ours. It's not that we collect a tax from that country we're importing goods from, we just make it more expensive for our own people by jacking up the price.

Trickle down works great, but it's hard to have trickle down on a fiat standard. Do you not notice the falling price of electronics? Tvs that were hundreds of dollars just 15 years ago, you almost can't give them away. Computers of five years ago you can buy for about $100-$150. As long as central banks like the FED can print 10s of billions out of thin air, prices will always continue to rise.

I'm not a fan of pollution either, but we have to remove some environmental regulations. Shutting down coal plants and diminishing our capacity to produce energy merely increases the cost of energy. It's hard to be competitive as a business with rising input costs and high levels of taxes.

I also find it ironic that consumers want low prices but get mad when their employer wants low prices (cost of labor). Or people call their employer greedy but want a bunch of stuff for free and a %500 pay raise even though they might be doing a menial job like cashiering. People will always be paid what they are worth. Supply and demand.

As long a good men do nothing and do what is right then something is going to come and do it for you.

To heck with trickle down and fiat currency. I voted for Reagan, Dole and both Bushes except for Perot.

I used to debate with my coworkers for hours about the same thing. I won't anymore. I have seen their true colors.

Patriotism also extends to your economics

I am happy to be a new independent

Re: Outsourcing of Jobs in North America: What is being done to stop it?
I work for a large health insurance company. We process claims for the elderly and disabled. The company continues to outsource the claims processing jobs. They will even train them to speak like Americans. They are even encouraged to use fake American sounding names like Bill and Susan.

Because they're not real jobs bills.
Because they're fakes loaded with poison pills such as the repeal of Obamacare, or making abortion a crime, or more tax cuts for the rich, etc., etc.

Relax! My senator said he was going to stop the jobs from leaving our state in an election ad. All is well!

I'm only going to tackle one of your points.

This is simply not true.

In truth, inequality in America tracks more closely with a classic marxist analysis whereby the owners of capital exploit a surplus of labor to keep wages low and generate high profits for themselves -- depriving workers of a fair share of the value they are creating for companies. Yes, there are smart entreprenuers taking big risks in America, but the more dominant face of the economy is well-established corporations run by professional managers who keep finding new ways to drive labor costs down and profits up.

Consider a new study out today by the National Employment Law Project (NELP), which shows that most low-wage workers aren't employed at struggling start-ups or local businesses trying to expand. Instead, says NELP, the majority of such workers are employed by large corporations. And the reason these workers make chump change is not because such corporations are battling to maintain their razor thin profit margins in tough times. Rather, these companies are making plenty of money -- more in many cases then before the recession. According to NELP, of the top 50 low-wage employers in America: 92 percent were profitable last year; 63 percent are earning higher profits now than before the recession; and 73 percent have higher cash holdings now than before the recession.
