They also function as honeypots and used for data mining purposes to profile forum users.

Many trolls/shills on conspiracy sites will be spooks doing the work of their employers ~ USA / UK / Israel.

Some 'posters' are multiple identity bots controlled by humans.

The shills and trolls are paid operatives who are most likely employed by private companies contracted by alphabet agencies to run black propaganda campaigns on various conspiracy sites, some of which have been infiltrated and/or domains covertly purchased and completely taken over.

It's a major PSYOP aimed at internet users who are waking up.

It has come to our attention that rogue agents under assumed names have begun to use the internet as an underground channel for distribution of classified information as it relates to our involvement with the event of september 11th, 2001.To rectify this situation, we authorize the immediate creation of false personalities who will be logged onto major 9/11 message boards and internet relay chat sessions. Once these internet personalities have established themselves, websites supposedly created by them will go "live" with the sole purpose of discrediting and providing humourous coverage of the unauthorized information. A second set of personalities will also be created to serve as extremist 9/11 researchers. These people will claim credit for the unautorized information and transform it using absurd exagerations to appear hoax-like and nonsensical in a effort to further invalidate the significance of this data to the general public.

i think those who are revulsed by those threads have probably , over time , done their bit and have moved on to help and learn elsewhere

Great post op! I would give you a five star rating, but I ran out of my allotment of giving stars. Nine out of ten stars I give to the Shills and fear mangers one stars. I am glad some one here is a wake! I usually get banned for pointing out the shills and fear mangers.
