Not to condone illegal border crossing, but.. there is a long-time practice out west[california] to use mexican labor in the fields as pickers.. this was welcomed by the farmers and even encouraged because the locals wouldn't do that kind of work for little pay...
They could save a lot of money and maximize profits. Of course, many of the workers stayed for the chance of a better life.

Same in the construction industry..
During the real-estate boom, mexicans crews were used to save money... some contractors and construction companies maximized profits, saved on costs... and many more workers stayed.
Some construction companies went under because they wouldn't use the illegals.. couldn't compete with the under-bidders.

The politicos used this demographic to their own purposes ..and now we have what we have..

Originally, slaves were brought to this country to work in the tobacco fields.. you wouldn't expect the landed Virginia gentry to pick their own tobacco, would you..?
