Why is the SINKHOLE now smelling like diesel fuel?
It's making residents ill??

An oil slick in the sinkhole area is now so powerful, it can be smelled a half-mile from La. 70 that is near its boundary. The diesel vapors are making some residents ill, they say.

Seeing as diesel is made out of crude oil. I do not follow your confusion as to why diesel smells like oil

I'm just confused because there have been so many different "things"

oil
butane
radioactive material
natural gas

Ah ok. Well that's a different story. I'm also wondering why a sinkhole has radioactive isotopes. That's odd

The entire area of the 1-mile by 3-mile Napoleonville Salt Dome is sinking, according to Bayou Corne sinkhole evacuee Harry Boudreaux, speaking to a reporter Saturday morning after a community meeting where he and other area residents hoped to be briefed on the latest disaster developments there that are impacting their human rights to security and health.

“The disaster is made all the more worrisome because the hole is believed to be close to a well containing 1.5 million barrels of liquid butane, a highly volatile liquid that turns into a highly flammable vapor upon release,” CNN reported Friday about Louisiana's declared State of Emergency.

Earlier it was reported the butane-filled well is only 1500 feet from the sinkhole and it will not be emptied.

If just the one salt dome goes, than yes the "sinking" would stop. The salt caverns run for miles however, all the way out into the Gulf. If a chain reaction were to occur, well......
Lots of cracks and seepage going on, along with seismic activity. Not good.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24515302

Yes. no, yes... depends on the oil.

The reality is that most diesel smells like oil having a pretty high percentage of thick oil in its mix.

Gasoline has nearly no oil in its mix thus smells like, well gasoline.

Different oils smell differently. Clean oils (sweet crude) actually doesn't smell too much of oil. Crude, or shale oils tend to have a more oily/diesel smell to them.

Black oil is 'dirty' mixed with sediments and other things. Sweet oil tends to be greener and semi-transparent.

Then you have shades of dark, browns even red oils - depending on the surrounding soils.

One thing could be the radio active materials that they are being exposed to..the other could be the fact that they know this is going to just keep getting bigger and bigger..and we are going to start seeing gas and things related to this start showing up further and further away from that sink hole..already 4.5 miles away last I read.

Ok so it's crude oil in there since they are smelling diesel....now the question is, is it normal to have crude oil in there?

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but I just want to understand and I can't keep up with the millions of other posts about it.

On every thread/post about the sinkhole and grotesque happenings in Louisiana, there's always gotta be someone who makes a smartass comment, "throw a match in the hole" or something of the like. Really, people? ffs. gangup

Hey India, why don't we come around your neck of the woods and light all the random garbage and sewage filling the streets and see how you dig it. Maybe throw some dynamite in the Ganges and watch that toxic sludge go ablaze?

Good god. Anyway, carry on.
