Ok, what about this?

“The disaster is made all the more worrisome because the hole is believed to be close to a well containing 1.5 million barrels of liquid butane, a highly volatile liquid that turns into a highly flammable vapor upon release,” CNN reported Friday about Louisiana's declared State of Emergency.

Earlier it was reported the butane-filled well is only 1500 feet from the sinkhole and it will not be emptied.

Blame BP . They are the ones who tapped into that volcanic pressure cooker in the Gulf . Now that they have let the pressure come up from below , it's now made its way through cracks , tunnels whatever to the Louisiana salt domes . Hence the smell now and gas before . Somewhere around there soon , BOOM.

i thought the salt storage areas were cut with water and diesel fuel was used to keep the top from cutting (diesel lighter than water floated to the top)

Avery Island (where they grow Tabasco peppers and make the sauce) is a salt mine on top of a salt dome, and has a tourist gig to let people go into the mine.

You are underground and under a swamp when in the mine. When they dissolve the salt to mine brine, they assume that by replacing it with brine the integrity of the dome will be fine (because fluid is incompressible).

To help insure this, they pump diesel or oil into the brine mix to avoid the upper part of the brine pocket from dissolving the salt. Oil and diesel float, and so the top of the cavern isn't exposed to water.

They assume geopressure will prevent and limit the salt from dissolving the used mining cavern laterally. Only so much salt can go into solution, and once saturation is reached, the dissolving stops.

This has been done for decades in the Gulf Coast, as it sits on top of bedrock with a layer of salt above it. The entire Gulf of Mexico, from Cuba to Mexico sits on top of a salt layer, and drilling through this salt is what defines a "sub-salt" well in the Gulf of Mexico area.

The religion of submission cannot survive an open and honest discussion of its convoluted and foolish scriptures, its sexually perverted terrorist prophet, or its deceitful and demented god. When Western leaders become unified and resolute in their hostility to Islam's violent and ungodly beginnings, Muslims will flee the religion because they will be horrified by its endorsement of terrorism, mass murder, slave trading, plunder, kidnapping, and rape.

If Muslims & their apologists really want to cure "Islamophobia," here is an easy way. Focus their indignation on Muslims committing violent acts in the name of Islam, not on non-Muslims reporting on those acts.

We are all born ignorant, but it takes a lot of work to keep looking the other way to remain stupid.

Islam is not a race - the racism rant is lame, used by the intellectually lazy to derail the debate.

Re: Why is the SINKHOLE now smelling like diesel fuel?
Won't it stop "sinking" once the caverns are filled? It's not like the earth is cracking?? I just want to know WTF?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24515302

well there are 2 things....
first there is a huge salt deposit, or the salt dome. there are many of these and they are very large this one is about 2 miles wide and 3 miles long and very deep.
these domes are about 3,000 feet underground.

second, inside of these salt domes some bright ones thought it would be a good idea to hollow out large holes, or caverns. then fill them with god knows what.

now here is what the diesel smell might be coming from. after the caverns are filled with liquid gases they pumped in diesel fuel to seal the caverns and keep the pressure.
but, some caverns were filled with diesel for storage.
most of our nations oil reserves are also held in these domes.

now just to make thing clear.
around these domes are lots of pockets of oil, methane gas, had deeper down methane-hydrate. now if the temperature down there goes to high from any of the issues or things stored there.....well the methane-hydrate will dissociate....or release the methane gas which will expand to about 10 time it's volume at super sonic speeds.
it is also and most likely possible the methane gas and hydrocarbon coming up everywhere are connected to the BP rupture and have been traveling deep underground from the GOM.
