aren't the numbers on the key the 'cut number' for that key?
just go to any lock smith with type of key and number

No, they are all special keys, and not the type sold to the public, but of course, any licensed locksmith will have access to them from their suppliers.

This man has the keys to the city — and he’s selling them for a measly 150 bucks.

If the wrong person buys a set, we could all be in trouble.

Retired New Jersey locksmith Daniel Ferraris, 69, is hawking what he calls a “firemen’s key ring” — and what a terrorist might call a dream come true.

The set consists of five keys that would allow control of virtually any elevator in the city, could knock out power to municipal buildings and skyscrapers, darken city streets, open subway gates and some firehouse doors and provide full access to 1 World Trade Center and other construction sites.

And thank you to the NY Post for posting a copy of the keys in an image. Now I don't even need to buy a copy as I can manufacture them on my 3D printer from the nice clean image.

Thanks guys! Saved me $150.... LOLOLOLOLOL

how id you know what SIZE they were to duplicate??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9757217

They are standard sized keys.

For example, a KW1 key is a KW1 key, most likely you even have a KW1 key on your keychain. Good look.

Wonder if they'll open the door to his cell in Federal Pound-me-in-the-ass Prison, which is where he'll likely end up on some kind of charges.

There is nothing CRIMINAL about this at all.

As long as he returned any keys that were the property of another he is FINE.

There is no law anywhere that says you can not copy a key.

No they may SUE him in CIVIL court because he WOULD be directly responsible for making them spand money to change locks.

These keys are not "controlled" keys.

All power company employees carry padlock keys to thousands of gates, etc.

Possession of these keys by MANY has already been the case.

Also, if you think for one moment a "terrorist" would need a "key" to get in someplace you are just stupid. A lockpick set would do just as fine.

I can open a padlock with a pick and rake in SECONDS. I learned how to do it for fun.

Yep very easy indeed.

The first two keys are Yales, first one looks like a Y2, the other a Y1.

Most people's homes use a SC1 or a KW1... occasionally an AR1. That means if you have an SC1 key, it's channeled to fit any lockset that takes an SC1, so you can put the key in the lock, but you cannot turn it.

Oh wow. What the fuck!

Is this what it's come to folks? I mean really?

What do you guys think about this?
 Quoting: Mister Obvious

Are you aware there are keys to every cockpit on airplanes? They were available to every employee prior to 9/11 whether you worked in the kitchens or cleaned the planes.

Same with every building at the World Trade Center. How do janitors get in rooms, etc.

Think about it.

Well the City had better be the high bidder!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24278562

He's a locksmith. He'll just make more, and maybe he has a buy it now with 10,000 available. lol.

edit to add: Can you even imagine 10,000 people running around NYC with all those keys? They would have to rename it Chaos City!

Anyway, those keys don't really belong to him. They are the property of NYC local government, and they should stop his auction listing, and confiscate them from him.

THIS! He is a locksmith-he has more----DUH.

I didn't say it was criminal, just that those in the justice system won't take kindly to this. Nice of them to take detailed photos of the keys and post them online as well. It narrows down the keyblanks one would need to recreate these.

To expand upon why I think this is boring, do you really not think that similar keys have gone missing during the years, with all of the people that have access to them?

They've never been lost, ever? Picked up by somebody who found out what they were?

I think we have more to worry about than power turned off in a building, or elevators not working until the fire department arrives to turn them back on again.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4428411

Chances are they have been lost before but the person who found them most likely had no idea what they found. Even if they did know what they had they probably didn't intend to cause harm with them.

This isn't the case selling them on Ebay. The only people that want to buy these keys on Ebay are people who intend to use them for their own good. God knows what they intend. Maybe it's a child rapist who plans to use them to get access to victims. Maybe a murderer. Maybe a terrorist.

Shit like this shouldn't be sold on Ebay. I would be pissed in a lived in NY and someone could buy keys to my apartment building.
Ayatollah Khomeini:
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of [other] countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world…. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender to the enemy? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] verses and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”
