Global help urged to avert reactor 4 pool fire U.S. expert appalled by Tepco's attitude over 'sleeping dragon' risk
KYOTO — The risk of a fire starting in reactor 4's spent-fuel pool at the Fukushima No. 1 plant continues to alarm scientists and government officials around the world, prompting a leading U.S. nuclear expert to urge Japan to tap global expertise to avert a catastrophe.

Goal number 1 on that site is to get that pool empty. And it will take, once the building is built, it will take a year or two, so they are not out of the woods by any means because if there were a seismic event and the pool were to drain, it could still have a fuel pool fire and contaminate the entire country. So it is improving because they are in the process. You know Helen, they finally figured this out this year.

Yes, and the last fuel they move is the most radioactive, which is still the most dangerous. So removing the fuel at the beginning is actually the easy part. The last fuel is the newest fuel and is physically hot and of course has the most radiation so that fuel will be the last stuff they move in perhaps 2014 or 2015.

Well if it has got 7,000 bundles now and each bundle weighs a ton, there are 7,000 tons of spent fuel in that common fuel pool.

And then each reactor II, reactor I, reactor III, all have 500-600 bundles, so there is, if you do the math, there is 600 tons of material in each of those reactors. There is a huge amount of nuclear waste. There is 40 years of nuclear waste on that site. Plus what is already in the dry cask storage. They have a dry cask facility on site too. And that survived the tsunami and the earthquake just fine. So the goal here is to get it all into dry cask over the next 10 years.

We have very big problem here, at best case they need 4 years min to remove and secure spent fuel as they say ..

So are you think we will not have M 6.5 + in that area in that time??

I don't think so, for my that possibility exceeds 95 % that we will have there EQ over M 6.5

Many information telling us full pool can very easily collapse with shallow EQ around M 7.0 ..

Japanese scientists have announced there is a 70 percent probability of Tokyo experiencing a magnitude-7 earthquake in the next four years, a significant elevation of the threat to a city that is home to 8.9 million people.

The Japanese capital has historically been subjected to major earthquakes in cycles of approximately 60 years. The last major disaster struck in 1923, when The Great Kanto Earthquake caused the deaths of more than 105,000 people and flattened large parts of Tokyo, Yokohama and the surrounding Kanto region.

A model by the government has estimated that a magnitude 7.3 quake beneath Tokyo Bay would kill 5,600 people in the city and injure 145,000 people, of whom 22,000 would be seriously injured.

Spent fuel pool

Spent fuel pools (SFP) are storage pools for spent fuel from nuclear reactors. They are typically 40 or more feet (12 m) deep, with the bottom 14 feet (4.3 m) equipped with storage racks designed to hold fuel assemblies removed from the reactor. A reactor's pool is specially designed for the reactor in which the fuel was used and situated at the reactor site. In many countries, the fuel assemblies, after being in the reactor for 3 to 6 years, are stored underwater for 10 to 20 years before being sent for reprocessing or dry cask storage. The water cools the fuel and provides shielding from radiation.

Unit 4 Reactor

A Fukushima spent fuel pool in the year 1999 (the view is obstructed by the reflection of the loading crane on the water surface).

At the time of the earthquake, Unit 4 had been shut down for shroud replacement and refueling since 29 November 2010.[1][2] All 548 fuel rods had been transferred in December 2010 from the reactor to the spent fuel pool on an upper floor of the reactor building[3] where they were held in racks containing boron to damp down any nuclear reaction.[4] The pool is used to store rods for some time after removal from the reactor and contains 1,331 rods.[5] Recently active fuel rods produce more decay heat than older ones.[6] At 04:00 JST on Monday 14 March, water in the pool had reached a temperature of 84 °C compared to a normal value of 40–50 °C.[4] The IAEA was advised that the temperature value remained 84 °C at 19:00 JST on 15 March

TEPCO and the Japanese Government have proved themselves far more adroit at lying and "saving face" than anything else. They figure if they ignore this "sleeping dragon" then it will continue to sleep!

WRONG!

They're going to poison the whole world with their ignorance and greed and denial. If the west doesn't step in, then China may well attack Japan to get this shit under control. When the Russians lost Chernobyl, they were pumping tons of concrete into the mess within DAYS! This fucking thing is still wide open spewing forth its poison after a year or more! WHY it has not been entombed in concrete using remote pumpers if need be, is inconceivable to any rational person!

These cheap fucks are literally INSANE. And their INSANITY will not only kill their own population but the rest of the Far East as well!

SOMEONE HAS TO DO SOMETHING TO STOP OR MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THIS MESS AND DO IT NOW!! IT CANNOT BE IGNORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ANY LONGER!

GOD HAVE MERCY UPON THIS STUPID COUNTRY AND THE NATIONS AND PEOPLE THEY ARE HARMING WITH THEIR INACTION AND FEAR!

lol i just had an idea

can you imagine something apocalyptic would happen and the earth was washed clean etc and 10,000 from now a new civilisation is living here and starts digging around like we do. and they find some huge kast in the ground filled with radioactive glowing hot stuff. or even if it not radioactive or hot anymore and they just dont know what it is. that would be weird to them. just in a random place in the earth.. a huge kast. with stuff in it.

that would have them guessing forever. kinda like we still dont get alot of stuff from the history.

It wouldn't still be physically hot, it would however still be very radioactive and very lethal.

we wonder why the history of the past is cryptic and in desolation.....

unit 4 is not the emergency.... 50 metres from the reactors is the "common" fuel pool.... guess why it never gets a mention.. sorry atom family... boy... the best.. whatever.. japan is doomed.. mark my words... they just wondering what they can do next... shoe fits.. you have to wear it....
