Catholics: forget about purgatory......it is not in Scripture.......and is a man-made invention from a mere mortal......and another lie of the devil.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24909996

Yes it is! Actually with no authority, Martin Luther
threw out the Book of Maccabees because 2 Maccbees shows Judaism believes in a place of purgation.

In the Gospel...

Some Fundamentalists charge "The word purgatory is nowhere found in Scripture." This is true, and yet it does not disprove the existence of purgatory or the fact that belief in it has always been part of Church teaching. The words Trinity and Incarnation arenít in Scripture either, yet those doctrines are clearly taught in it. Likewise, Scripture teaches that purgatory exists, even if it doesnít use that word and even if 1 Peter 3:19 refers to a place other than purgatory.

Christ refers to the sinner who "will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come" (Matt. 12:32), suggesting that one can be freed after death of the consequences of oneís sins. Similarly, Paul tells us that, when we are judged, each manís work will be tried. And what happens if a righteous manís work fails the test? "He will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire" (1 Cor 3:15). Now this loss, this penalty, canít refer to consignment to hell, since no one is saved there; and heaven canít be meant, since there is no suffering ("fire") there. The Catholic doctrine of purgatory alone explains this passage.

2 Maccabees 12:46
It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.

Matthew 12:32
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come.

1 Corinthinas 3:13-15
Every man's work shall be manifest; for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is. [14] If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. [15] If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.
