Racism is terrifying. It is a shaky fault line that keeps rumbling and threatening to explode into a full-blown earthquake. It has always been there under the surface, and rattles a bit from time to time. But one of these days it is going to erupt into full-on doom.

What is scary is seeing the person who is supposed to be leading our country demonstrate such racism openly. I guess I saw that subtly under the surface too, but naively ignored it.

I ran into a man in our town just after Katrina at the local gas station. He just got back from volunteering his time, property, and gas to help evacuate them to Houston. He told me he would NEVER do it, again.

He said the group he picked up were incredibly ungrateful. They insisted he pull over so they could go to the liquor store. He refused. They slashed the seats and urinated all over them. Never again, he said. He was pretty ticked.
