Cascadia Subduction zone
America's Indonesia!!!

A great read on a subduction zone that mirrors the one that broke in Indonesia.

[link to www.pnsn.org]

(pics on the link)

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a very lonhappy_bunnying fault that stretches from mid-Vancouver Island to Northern California. It separates the Juan de Fuca and North America plates. New ocean floor is being created offshore of Washington and Oregon. As more material wells up along the ocean ridge, the ocean floor is pushed toward and beneath the continent. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is where the two plates meet.

The width of the Cascadia Subduction Zone fault varies along its length, depending on the temperature of the subducted oceanic slab, which heats up as it is pushed deeper beneath the continent. As it becomes hotter and more molten it eventually loses the ability to store mechanical stress and generate earthquakes. The "locked" zone is storing up energy for an earthquake, and the "transition" zone, although somewhat plastic, could probably rupture.

HOW BIG ARE CASCADIA SUBDUCTION ZONE QUAKES?

Great Subduction Zone earthquakes are the largest earthquakes in the world, and can exceed magnitude 9.0. Earthquake size is porportional to fault area, and the Cascadia Subduction Zone is a very lonhappy_bunnying fault that stretches from mid-Vancouver Island to Northern California. It separates the Juan de Fuca and North America plates. Because of the very large fault area, the Cascadia Subduction Zone could produce a very large earthqauke, magnitude 9.0 or greater, if rupture occurred over its whole area.
HOW OFTEN ARE CASCADIA SUBDUCTION ZONE QUAKES?

The last known great earthquake in the northwest was in January, 1700, just over 300 years ago. Geological evidence indicates that great earthquakes may have occurred at least seven times in the last 3,500 years, suggesting a return time of 400 to 600 years.

Why was I banned for posting this ( I am using my pocket pc to post this, different IP) ???

This just goes to show how stupid the autoban program is. Trinity, kiss my ass. Now you have something to ban me for.

The Discovery Channel, or NOVA, or one of those did an eye popping show on this too. If the worst came to pass it would wipe out the NW coast if I recall correctly (if somewhat dimly)..

The discovery channel did a show called American Tsunami. It was based on this subduction zone. Tidal waves would be over 100' high. The coast would be
toast, from Seattle to San Francisco, and probably farther south.

Typing on this pocket pc sucks, still banned at home IP. Traveler, eat me!!!

Here is another link on the volcano off of Vancouver which is causing the seafloor to push under the subduction zone.

Mm, thats just plain stupid, to ban me for using these words. I would repeat them, but then this IP would be banned. What the hell, lets see if I can circumvent this dumb program.

"The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a very lonhappy_bunnying fault that stretches from mid-Vancouver Island to Northern California."

inset long sloping between very and fault. Now is that a word worth banning Me over.

Trinity, if you read this, this should be a great example of how broken your program is. Its a wonder everyone isn't banned.

I've found no rhyme or reason how that works, I've had it happen to my replies as well, but I haven't gotten banned for anything.

How ironic. I can tell Trinity to kiss my ass, and no ban. But I can't use the words long sloping together without being banned. Maybe the government IS running this site, lol.

Re: Cascadia Subduction zone
The Cascadia fault when it goes will be horrible. The greatest loss of life will be from the quake and not Tsunami. The population on the coast is sparse.

The caveat is when will this happen - could be tonight or in 300 years

Re: Cascadia Subduction zone
I did not use the words happy Bunny. They were inserted by the autoban program, to replace the words " long sloping ". These are very bad words I guess.
