Sleeping Giant (OP) User ID: 543618 United States 10/03/2012 12:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Philippines has a huge and thriving social media community. About one third of the country's 100 million people use the Internet, with nearly 96 percent of them on Facebook. The prominent human rights lawyer Harry Roque says the law is repressive With the new law, authorities will have the power to collect data from personal social media accounts and listen into conversations on Internet voice services, such as Skype. In addition to the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation, a special law enforcement unit will help coordinate surveillance. The activist group Human Rights Watch is alarmed over what it calls the "excessive and unchecked powers" that authorities will have to "shut down websites and monitor online information." Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24851697 Japan just made downloading a criminal offense, punishable by up to 2 years in prison. >>> [link to torrentfreak.com] Wow. I hadn't heard that, thanks! Downloading pirated material in Japan can now earn you two years in prison and a fine of two million yen ($25,600) for each purloined file, with uploaders facing 10 years in the Big House and a fine five times as large. The laws – some of the toughest ever enacted against illegal downloaders – were passed in June after strong lobbying from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). Downloading has been illegal in Japan for the last two years, but as a civil offense with no sanctions, not a criminal matter with jail time. Quoting: Sleeping Giant Now there is a true example of organized crime. The PNP wears uniforms, have a structured organization... and are are all criminals. I can't count the number of times these fuckers pulled me over on some desolate road and tried -- usually with success -- to extract money from me. If I was lucky, they would put a chalk mark on my bumper -- so that the remaining checkpoints I went through would already know I had PAID... and let me go without asking for more money. I learned never to travel late in the month -- when their paycheck had run out and they were more likley to need money... There were a few good ones out there... but it is so hard to tell who is who. Have a nice day = GFY. GFY = Go Fuck Yourself. If this offends you then have a nice day. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 24398416 United States 10/05/2012 11:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Philippines has approved measures to prosecute users that post “defamatory” comments on social media websites such as Quoting: Sleeping Giant Twitter and Facebook. They will be liable for a fine of 1 million pesos (US$24,000) or face up to 12 years in prison. Websites that publish the material may also be shut down. The cyber-law has been branded as ‘draconian’ and a serious violation of freedom of speech by rights groups. “The cyber crime law needs to be repealed or replaced,” said Brad Adams, Asia director of the Human Rights Watch. “It violates Filipinos’ rights to free expression and it is wholly incompatible with the Philippine government’s obligations under international law.” He stressed that while the bill was in action it will have a “chilling effect over the entire Philippines online community.” [link to rt.com] There's gotta be a subplot.....
