After a few meetings, the rabbi seemed positive that I came from Jewish stock which surprised me greatly. Admittedly, I knew that a lot of Mennonite and Amish surnames are exactly the same as some German Jewish surnames, but I had never thought much of it. However, after reading The Chosen many other thoughts are coming to mind with more and more similarities becoming apparent.

First, the Amish are very similar to the Hasid. They are both fundamentalists, strict in their observance of separating themselves from the secular world (including their clothing), and practice white magic.

Seems odd doesn’t it? Let’s get a little more picky.

Both excommunicate and shun any members who stray from strict observance of their rules and traditions.

Both speak in an older German language (Yiddish and Pennsylvania Dutch) which many have said that the Amish and Yiddish speakers can understand each other easily.

Also, both moved to areas in Europe and Russia when heavily persecuted.

Furthermore, German princes offered protection to Mennonites for their great farming abilities and to Jews for their great monetary abilities.

Just an FYI.

Hold onto your Amish beliefs OP, those that you can in a modern civilized way.

You will be better off I think.

Even the Vatican holds the Amish as VIPs in a world as such. Be proud of who you are, you may have moved forward compared to many Amish but you still have that basis in you, it is nothing to be ashamed of, that is for sure.

What a great thread.

We are looking for a new Messianic synagogue, ours is
closing as rabbi is retiring.

Are you anywhere near southeastern PA?

the similarities are striking.
the language and clothing,
many of the habits.

the modesty of the women.
Well, there was apparently a film once,
a major movie(but I never knew the name)
in which an Amish farmer
and a Hassidic Jew are walking toward
one another on a country road.

They look.

They recognize.

And we as the audience marvel that they are so similar.
Now is the time.
