The air doesn't need to be super saturated for contrail formation.
Contrails have a critical temperature for formation...based on pressure level (altitude) and relative humidity...also the type of engine has an influence on contrail formation.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3843921 Yes, the air has to have enough moisture so the ADDED moisture from the engine brings it past saturation. The air must be supersaturated by the engine for the trail to persist. And yes, the more efficient the engine, the more water vapor created. Quoting: Noble Yes, I know that. But even if the parcel of air behind the engine is saturated with respect to water, the ambient air has to be saturated with respect for ice, so that the contrail persists as it returns to ambient conditions. Super saturation isn't the reason. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3843921 And what do you think the air is saturated with when the temperature is -40? Liquid water?!
