I'll try to explain a little better...
Think of a parcel of air as a really big balloon, like the size of your car.
This parcel of air is generated by the exhaust, in the wake of the engine. It has it's own temperature and humidity.
Ambient temp is self explanatory,it is the temp and humidity of the air surrounding this parcel.
Contrails occur when that parcel of air becomes saturated to the respect for water. That's why race cars can even generate contrails in the low pressure wake of the car's wings.
If the ambient air surrounding this parcel is not saturated with respect for ice, the contrail particles will go through sublimation (opposite of deposition, return to ambient conditions, and disappear.
The contrail will persist if the ambient air is saturated with respect for ice...since it will be maintained as the parcel returns to the ambient conditions.
