OBAMA was merely trying to coast with his lead in tonight's debate performance
Obama and his advisors determined that the best course of action in this first debate was to play a "prevent defense" (since they are leading in the polls -- a little bit in the popular vote, but more importantly he's winning in the swing states that Romney MUST win). In other words, don't do anything risky. No aggressive attacks, etc.
Romney, imo, probably will benefit more than Obama from this first debate.
You can bet, though, that Obama's performance in the next debate will be different. In the second debate, Romney will be on the defensive, due to Obama calling him out on 2 things: 1) Forcing Romney to offer an alternative plan, instead of simply attacking Obama's record, and 2) Forcing Romney to detail how he'd implement the few plans that he has proffered.
The results of this first debate are typical of most first Presidential debates (especially when the sitting President has a lead) -- the challenger comes out swinging and attacking, and the incumbent President plays it close to the vest. Nothing unusual or extraordinary about it. After the first debate, Obama will adjust his strategy. Expect the same performance from Romney in the second debate.
