THE DISTURBING REALITY OF SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IN NY PRISONS
A new investigative report released by the New York Civil Liberties Union details the use of solitary confinement in New York state prisons, often with disturbing results. Solitary confinement–referred to as “extremem isolation” by the NYCLU, as two people are often subjected to the conditions commonly associated with the term “solitary confinement” at once–is often used in an arbitrary and unjust way, harms prisoners and corrections officers, and decreases prison and community safety, according to the report. NYCLU reporters spent a year investigating extreme isolation, speaking with more than 100 people who have spent time in extremem isolation, as well as family members and corrections officers.
Aside from the obvious psychological effects of the practice — “I feel like the walls are closing in on me. I get suicidal,” reported one prisoner–the statistics about when, how often, and against whom solitary confinement is used are staggering. For example: eight percent of New York’s prisoners are in extreme isolation at any one time, the vast majority of whom are being punished forn non-violent offenses. The number of black prisoners kept in extreme isolation is disproportionately high– “while blacks represent about 14 percent of the state’s population, they account for nearly 50 percent of the prison population and 59 percent of the population in extreme isolation,” according to the NYCLU–and juveniles and the elderly are regularly kept in solitary confinement.

Yes, dont be a criminal, but ...

USA - Rough justice for women behind bars

The use of shackles on pregnant inmates is just one example of the cruelty and ill-treatment many women suffer in US jails and prisons, Amnesty International said today in a new report issued as part of its international campaign against human rights violations in the USA. [link to www.tgorski.com]

Sorry, but if I was incarcerated, I would DEMAND to be put in solitary with a good book .. e.g. Gravitation by Misner Thorne & Wheeler. Go ahead, look it up. It could take a few years to get through that.

I've see 'Americas Hardest Prisons', and frankly, solitary seems easy peasy compared to socialising in there...

I once did three months on block (solitary confinement).

No matteress or chair no books except religious bullshit no talking to cell next door a brickwall outside my window to look at, plastic sheeting over the windows to stop you opening them for fresh air, everytime I spoke without being spoken to by a screw (gaurd) it would extend my stay, I chose to tell them to fuck off daily took the beatings and walked out of jail with my head held high... They never broke me I never did what I was told.

I was 14.

My cousin worked at colorado state prison and they had richard ramirez there for a transfer he was keptd 23 hr lock solitary confinement the whole shabang and i asked my cousin did he do anything crazy while there or what? He was like no he sat indian style on the floor and hummed all day or laughed to himself remembering stuff. He had a hour of release so they let him pace a small rec area under guard. I guess he had been locked up so long it didn't bother him at all at least the week he was there.

THIS!

Normally I would agree, but modern governments have a trick of creating "administrative criminals" by passing law that turns otherwise law abiding and peaceful citizens into criminals. They also create conditions that manufacture criminals. Such as, for instance, failure to instantly obey a police command. A person who is hard of hearing, does not clearly understand, or is stiff in their joints, may not be able to instantly comply. Then once they have their hands on you, it becomes a matter of normal course to manufacture infractions.

What about being in solitary for a month or longer with no books or reading material of any kind? That's probably how it is. I can't imagine how I would deal with that.

Soon this type of imprisonment will be reserved for political prisoners. Wrong speech, resisting the man, not respectful to corrupt gov't, not licking jackboots will get you a lengthy term in prison. Real criminals will be treated like royalty compared to political prisoners. Coming soon in the United States.

Anon is right.

I will say that USA is not as lenient in prisons as the UK.

If they provided more help in the outside world they may not have such a high crime rate.

So, the purpose of solitary confinement is to discipline or punish?

If it was like The Hole in the movie Cool Hand Luke, I'd say yes. Thats punishment.

But to be away from the general population, in a private cell seems more like a "time out".

But thats just me.
Most people bug the shit outta me after awhile.
If I was a lifer in the Big House, I'd like a little time away from the crowd.
