Does anyone here have GERD?
It's gastroesophageal reflux disease. How do you deal with it?

Re: Does anyone here have GERD?
My dauhter has gerd... they recommended prilosec and change in diet... no more spicy foods, jalepenos, lemons, oranges etc... anything that makes your stomach acids react. It took her a little while to figure out what foods to NOT eat...Now she doesn't have to take the prilosec anymore and isn't having symptoms either. There is another medication over the counter that is cheaper than prilosec, but I cannot for the life of me remember what the name of it was. I think it was ommeprozal(I'm sure not spelled correctly), but it worked just as good at about half the cost.

Re: Does anyone here have GERD?
If you have GERD, it's a warning from you GI track that you are sensitive to something you are eating on a regular basis. Find what you are allergic to and eliminate it.

I used to need anti-acid medications on a daily basis. I kept bottles of that stuff at home, work, school and church..lol.

I got tired of taking all the pills and finally discovered i was sensitive to the wheat gluten in bread, muffins, donuts, cereal, cakes, cookies and some sandwiches.

I eliminated 90% of the wheat gluten from my diet! I no longer have GERD or excessive stomach acid. I don't even need antacids any longer unless I throw down a couple of donuts or bagels at work.

But at least I found the issue and am able to control the problem without some drug.

Thank you to those that responded. Mine is severe right now, but I didn't have extreme symptoms. It was that noticable to me. The acid damaged the sphincter in my throat so it doesn't completely close. Ach! Right now I'm taking Prilosec and the throat specialist said I'd need to stay on it for maybe a year. Everything I eat burns in my stomach. I've been reading up on Gerd and read that the stomach stops producing hyrocloric acid and instead produces lactic acid from festering food.

I'm going to miss all the junk food! No pop, chocolate, pizza...*sob*

If I eat right, will it improve? I even ordered Aloecure and it hasn't helped.

My symptoms were extreme throat pain(not acid indigestion kind) and a burning sensation in my stomach. My ears hurt; my whole throat was inflamed.

Re: Does anyone here have GERD?
I used to, and I used Prilosec. It works well.

However, when I stopped drinking any kind of soda, the GERD stopped immediately. If I don't have to take meds, I won't. It was just a simple change in diet/liquids.

Thank you, I'll try that. I was only told to stop all caffeine, but I don't want to give up chocolate!

Re: Does anyone here have GERD?
1. some people's stomach's are actually kind of shifted up to high because of coughing or throwing up. to make sure this isn't you, a few days in a row, and every month afterward...

first thing in the morning drink a glass of water. go over to the stairway and drop your heels abruptly a few times.

2. some people have reduced stomach acid. i know this sounds backwards, but it could be you. there is a baking soda burp test to see if it is you and what you will need to take is betaine hcl for a while until you pass the test. google it.

3. many people have dairy or gluten intolerences (or soy). the only way to know if this is you is to drop these foods and see if you feel better. no other test works as well.

4. take lots of beneficial bacteria and eat lots of fermented foods like yogurt. when my son was little he threw up alot, and we struggled with gerd. i really think it was the full fat organic cream topped yogurt that finally fixed him.

hth, and your welcome!

Re: Does anyone here have GERD?
dont know if I have GERD but it certainly sounds like that

please try
get some prune juice, small amount can go a looong way,not a cure, but a real effective attack stopper, might take an hour to work, get some orange juice(not concentrated) for immediate relief while waiting

please dont respond with the whole but orange juice is an acid thing! :)

Look for "Bragg" . That's the brand. Very common. Most supermarkets have it. 2 tablespoons in a glass of water. Add some organic honey for taste if you like. This stuff works! I shit u not. Good luck!

You're welcome.

I have also noticed that tap water and Evian gives me almost instant heart burn. Must be the minerals/crud in it. Use bottled water, or buy one of those Britta filters. That helped me too.
