Walmart is the only corp that is allowed to monopolize, along with their substandard practices and subhuman wages and you people think that these strikes aren't deserved?

Give your head a shake, granted some of the people that goto Walmart or work there are what I would say are not always the sharpest pencil in the box, but why are they treated like dogshit from one of the richest companies in the world?

Not to mention what they do to the governments and taxpayers for the breaks they get and the healthcare costs subsidies that they get as well.

Watch this video at least before judging why these people are striking.

You know what they should be striking for/against.....the proliferation of slave labor goods. Put an end to the slave labor inports and watch our manufacturing come back...watch the jobs come back. Then the walmart workers will have better work options.

Holly Crap that's a scary thougth! Don't know about other areas but I've seen the crews at my local Wallfarts. Just pictureing those folks in a picket line scares the hell out o me. It's like halloween comes early. Burrr..

I worked a second job as an overnight cashier for almost a year, 2007-08, in a forlorn attempt to keep our home from foreclosure (long story), and it was the WORST job I ever had! I had worked "minimum-wage"-type jobs before and although my pay WAS good for the work -- about $11.50 an hour, I think -- they treated their employees like lazy morons, which in my experience, was not true for at least 75% of the employees. (BTW, I have a 132 IQ and had held various kinds and levels of managment positions in different fields in the past, but because my husband and I had recently adopted two special needs kids, I could not return to work at a "regular" 40-hour job.) Wal-Mart did not respect employee "availability-to-work" schedules or requests for needed days off; there were posters saying that if we got sick, we should "work through it"; and management made no secret that they would take a harsh view to any attempts to organize. Also, they gave their employees DOUGHNUTS on Friday instead of something healthy like bagels and/or fruit -- giving employees nothing would have been healthier than doughtnuts! However, the final straw for me came when I was "asked" to mop the employee lunchroom, a janitor's job, which I refused to do -- and I gave notice the next day.

In my long employment past, I had worked for JCPenney, Borders, and Sears -- and Borders was 25 bimes better to their employees and 100 timnes a better place to work than Wal-Mart (before they started to go under, that is), followed closely by JCPenney. Sears was definitely last of the three-- but even Sears was ten times better than Wal-Mart.

I HATE Wal-Mart!

IF they fire them , the employees will just keep protesting and block the stores. They cant hire that many people . Also what if the low paid managers are also protesting?

I worked there as a truck unloader.

I had to unload the truck.

Organize the back shelves.

Then move at least 40 pallets onto the floor from the back.

That's at least 20,000 pounds. In a day.

Then they would literally come back and YELL at me for not doing it faster.

At 10.50 an hour.

THEN AT MY SCHEDULED QUITTING TIME. They would make me stay and do stock and I would get fired if I refused to do so.

And all the fucking girls get the cashier jobs and sit around the lunch room and bitch and bitch and bitch.

One day I just walked off the job because a family of bat's flew at me and I was like fuck this.

Now everytime I walk into walmart they say rude things and comment on how I betrayed them.

REALLY? I DID SO MUCH FOR THEM!?.

I WAS THE ONLY UNLOADER AND THEY STILL TREATED ME LIKE SHIT FUCK WALMART.

If you don't like the way Wal-Mart does business don't shop there, that's why I never shop in that hell hole, you're likely to run into Mama June and Honey Boo Boo at a moment's notice

Probably a protest against part time hours. Most retail stores and fast food places hire part time. Part time work is bad for the economy because workers have fewer dollars to spend.

I wish the article went into the reasons for the strike, and defined poor working conditions. The article is poorly written.

Good. I hope this is just the beginning of people standing up for what they deserve. I personally, havent shopped at a walmart in over 2 years. Very proud of being to find goods locally, supporting locals, and not a company that disrespects it's employees.

Walmart destroyed the small mom and pop stores, local buissess and farmers. All their products including their food comes from overseas. but then again, every retail store followed their example.
You can get better deals shopping on line, buying directly from the manufacturer and cutting out the middle man which is the retailer.

My step-son works at Walmart and this^^ is true. And he's also trying very hard to find another job.
Walmart is a joke. The prices on their cheap Chinese crap are NOT the lowest, but price-matching and their willingness to stop an EBT user's tantrum with any kind of ridiculous deal is all that keeps most people going back.

I can not wait until this Walmart cycle we're in ends and they ALL close down.

I use to work for walmart and one time someone mentioned the word "Union" and for three days they took all of us in groups into the back of the building by the loading docks and told us that the Union is going door to door at 3 am threatening their employees and what ever you do don't answer the door and stay away from them at all costs, and then told us that if we mention the word union suits from corporate will come and lock the place up and interrogate all of us until we speak and rat the person out.

It worked too, one older woman raised her hand and asked "Will the union men hurt us?", and store manager said, they could.

The most disgusting thing I ever had to go thru on a job, I quit the next day.

lol I forgot to add they also said the union men were from the south side of Chicago and were very very threatening.

walmart absolutely sucks. It keeps it's workers from having full time so it doesn't have to pay any benefits, and is basically a bully.

They don't want unions in there because this will force them to treat employees with respect and give them vacation time off,
able to leave at close of shift > only 8 hour work days
able to take sick time when needed....

Yeap...I worked at one of their distribution centers in 1993 or 94. We were up for our yearly raise and one of our best workers was up for his pay raise overview ( what ever they called it) They gave him a 5 cent raise and had to wait 3 months before it kicked in. I started looking for another job that day!
