There is a worldwide helium shortage

My sister actually told me this a few weeks ago when she was getting balloons for my nephew's birthday party. She could only buy so many at a time and they were expensive. Aparently helium is not renewable.

Can you say that in much, MUCH higher register?

How does the world run low on helium?

There is, indeed, a worldwide shortage of Helium. The last time there was a shortage like this, it was because US was getting ready to bomb Serbs and the military was buying tons of liquid He for thermal imaging units (sensors must be cooled down for ultimate sensitivity).

Just saying...

I bet it's being diverted for military uses.

It's true, guess we shouldn't have wasted it all on floating balloons. Helium is a very rare gas at ground level, it's something you find while mining. Once released it floats up and you can't extract it from space.

Helium is extracted from deep underground, where deposits of the gas have built up.

It is usually mined as a by-product of natural gas extraction. But resources are finite and demand is increasing, which is why supplies are restricted.

He added: "The reason that we can do MRI is we have very large, very cold magnets - and the reason we can have those is we have helium cooling them down.

"When you see that we're literally just letting it float into the air, and then out into space inside those helium balloons, it's just hugely frustrating. It is absolutely the wrong use of helium."

Now I get WHY at the Dollar Store they have these white cardboard hand written signs taped up saying that We Have Helium. I wondered about it for a moment. But knowing how dumbed down everyone is I thought...shit..it prob helps people figure out they sell balloons.

You must have read a different artical or I missunderstood something, I saw no green agenda in there.

I heard this recently from a friend and we got discussing at the time, is there any way to make any more? I didn't think you could. It's a potential byproduct of fusion reactions but other than that I think if it's done, it's done. Guess we'll never see hugh airships in our lifetime.
