Why are christians so fucking arrogant?

I hear what your saying Monty. I lived a full on Christian immersed life for 14-15 years, in a pentecostal(best way to describe it)type church fellowship. I met many great humble people, but also came across a FEW arrogant people as well.
These type think they know it ALL, preach humility & compassion etc to ALL, then get so "RELIGIOUS" when anyone PREACHES anything that does not gel with their beliefs in Christianity.
These type can respond on this forum however they like, but I've been amongst them and know how they think and how they feel.

Isn't it just so ARROGANT how people of different FAITHS(so to speak) preach that THEY are the ONES who through their GOD have acquired ALL the ANSWERS to ALL THINGS!!

And yes I do speak from experience. I once thought and felt spiritually the same, but now know that the origins of OUR CREATOR and HUMANITY as based on different books used, is a lot more mysterious and unknown than I first ever considered.

And YES I was a born again Christian with a spiritual relationship with a GOD/CREATOR(s) that is MORE REAL than written BOOKS that have been influenced and ALTERED from the original MANUSCRIPTS by the RELIGIOUS CONTROLLERS of the "DARK AGES" of our history.

Arrogant indeed REVEALS an attitude of "I know it ALL and nothing that goes against my understanding of knowledge acquired will be accepted"

Humility indeed ALLOWS the possibility that you may not have ALL the TRUTH you think you have, and others MAY indeed be correct in some of their acquired knowledge and understanding.

Monty, what is it exactly about Christians that you find arrogant? Is it because Christians believe they have the truth which makes you think they're arrogant? Or, is it the way far too many of those who call themselves Christians behave self-righteously and run around judging and condemning others?

In your original post you ask, "Did Christ not teach humility?". You are correct; Christ teaches this very thing. And, it is also true that many who call themselves Christians do not adhere to Christ's teachings.

On one late-night American TV show, they did a skit that I found quite interesting. The host said he wanted to boost his ratings in the Bible Belt, so he introduced "Nascar-driving, shotgun-toting Jesus". Then this man with long hair and a beard dressed as Jesus rode across the stage in a tiny Nascar go-cart shaking a shotgun over his head and shouting "yee-haw".

I realize the writers and the host of that show are not Christians, but I have to say that they very correctly depicted the sad state of apostate Christianity in America. It didn't anger me or offend me; it just made me sad, because it was true.

I am French, by my grandfathers blood line. I am American Black Foot, from the blood of my grandmother. That is my fathers side. My mothers side I am French, and English, blood line.

He describes his astonishment that, at the start of the 21st century, religious faith is gaining ground in the face of rational, scientific truth. Science, based on scepticism, investigation and evidence, must continuously test its own concepts and claims. In addition, though religions preach morality, peace and hope, in fact, says Dawkins, they bring intolerance, violence and destruction. At the extremes

He describes the Holy Land as the least enlightened place in the world, a microcosm of the threat to rational values and civilisation posed by religion, whose irrational roots, he says, are nourishing intolerance and murder.

There are plenty of characters to illustrate his thesis. There are fanatics, like the former West Bank settler who has taken the small step of converting from Jewish fundamentalist to Muslim fundamentalist, transferring his hatred from one side of the looking glass to the other. And the frighteningly charismatic leader of America's National Association of Evangelicals, who believes he has been chosen by God to convert Americans through religious gatherings that resemble rock concerts – though to Dawkins they feel more reminiscent of Nuremberg rallies.

Then there are the desperate, like those carrying burdens of disability or disease, who are among the 80,000 people a year who make the pilgrimage to Lourdes. Dawkins does the maths: out of the millions who, over a century, have placed their faith in a miracle restoring them to good health, there have been only 66 authenticated cures. A sense of belonging

Drawing on such examples, it is not difficult to demolish the claims of religion as fairytales, and dangerous ones at that. But there is more to religion than ancient stories and articles of faith. Dawkins touches on the sense of belonging promised by religious groups but dismisses this as 'seductive group solidarity', which he describes as a 'shared delusion'. In doing so, he glances off the more subtle dilemmas of how religions and religious traditions are woven through people's notions of 'community', 'history' and 'identity'.

Having a sense of one's place in the world is important to everyone but has particular significance for minorities and peoples under political, economic or military pressure. Individuals may even accept Dawkins' atheistic and scientific deconstruction of the myths they have grown up with but still defend and nurture the matrix of institutions, practices and relationships which make them who they are.

Christianity like so many other dogmas is a made up religion to suit the men in dresses ...er... power... who wish/wished to tell others how to live.

History shows us that the churches' message is often far, far removed from the teachings of Jesus. Religion and religious leaders have a lot to anwswer for.

The flock is taught to be 'good' in order to get to heaven.... a fear driven idea if I ever experienced it!

'Nice' in order to belong.

Under the 'nicety' is often so much unresolved rage... passive aggression.... and platitundinous quoting of the bible... which is frequently taken literally and not metaphorically.... as surely intended.

Authentic and tender communications are not generally the rule in my experience anyway.Passive aggressive, arrogant followers of any dogma usually attempt to sway another with self righteous superiority rather than real debate, discussion and dialogue.

Thankfully there are many - indeed, perhaps a minority - who have really integrate the real teachings and are a joy to read about... I don't personally know any.

I feel for you Monty... I haven't found a satisfactory way to communicate with the Christians in my life.... I hope you'll do better at it than me.
