I'm guessing the parents pulled him out of school in the middle of the year for some reason. Not just because they decided homeschooling would be fun. Something was probably going on with him. They were probably trying to help him. :(

If they knew this was a troubled child they should have made sure all guns were secure and that he did not know where they were. He took the gun from his Grandfather who lived across the street. Grandfather was a retired policeman and Jake knew where the gun was located.
