Why do you people think that has anything to do with it, either way? Millions of people go to public schools and home schools, very few of them kill anyone like this. This is a very unusual thing. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25035528 If he happened to be wearing a blue shirt when he did it, would you tards argue about whether blue shirts make people kill? The homeschool/public school debate in connection with this seems about as relevant. Because it's the first 3 words in the thread. Homeschooling families have gotten "touchy" because we get blamed for all kinds of things we have NO control over. I remember hearing on the tv when the bombing in OKC happened, that homeschoolers were suspect. We're just sensitive about being the national scapegoat, is all. You're right, though, the tragedy is the coldness in this young man's words and actions. |

I homeschooled my 3 kids and they are MORE normal than most public school kids. They are successful members of society, one with a dual major degree that is working in her field AND a good mother, one working in industry, and the last is still in school. I am SICK to death of everyone thinking homeschooling is odd. It isn't. Most don't even do it for religious reasons, they do it to make sure their children can READ their diploma! My violin teacher home schooled all her children. One is a physics major and the other goes to the U of I. I'm sure they will all go to college-five of them. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25033928 Wrong, I believe the article said that was his sister & it was January of 2010. Unless they are not talking about the "school year"... in any event you don't do this because of less than a year of homeschooling. Geez. I read an article that said January of 2012. If it was then or right after this school year started, it doesn't matter. Abruptly withdrawing doesn't happen just because you decide it would be fun to homeschool. It's because there is something wrong....either with the kid or with the school. The kid was probably having serious issues already and that's why they pulled him out. |

They were home schooled because they didn't want any other influence (science) messing with the kids. The smart kids figure this out pretty quickly and rebel. Sounds like that's what happened, but a bit extreme. What a waste of a likely gifted kid. |

Besides, all of you anti-government/public school people out there need to make up your minds. What are you, really? Since you quoted me let me reiterate that I never said anything about "Homeschooling" being the (or even A) cause of this. I said that the majority of Homeschooled kids are odd and cannot really make it in society. I have had the pleasure of living in a community where many are Homeschooled and (honestly) they are intelligent but nearly unemployable if the work deals with the public or demands indipendent thinking. I personally look at Homeschooling as potentially being far better than Public or private schools- But generally it falls far short of either. Again, if YOU are intelligent enough and willing to put the effort into it (and socialize your children at the same time) you are doing them very well and setting them up for success. I have seen the best citizens and most free thinking folks come from Homeschooled environments.I am merely saing that generally it is unqualified people with religions (almost cultish) ideology who homeschool and they produce robots with very little skills beyond memorization. -This wasnt an attack on Homeschooling, nor do I think its anyone's choice but the parents. No, you didn't say homeschooling was the cause of it. But the "odd" kid who is probably a product of poor socialization happened to be home schooled. Lets talk about "odd" and "socialization". Yes, home schooled kids are often odd. They seldom talk back, very seldom ever call other children names, are more likely to invite a strange child to play in their group, and more likely to accept people with differences. They are also more likely to know that many people mean many opinions, and that they can accept the right of the people to have the opinions without making it their own. Yes, I guess they are odd. Socialization. Studies have shown that as stated above, home schooled are more likely to invite and accept a new child into their group and be tolerant. They are more able to talk to all age groups than public schooled children. They are less likely to be involved in drugs, indiscriminate sex, and violence. "Robots with very little skills beyond memorization". How insulting can you be? No, I'm sure no one considered it an attack on homeschooling. Everything you've said in your posts describes public schooled children, not any home schooled one I've ever met. Sorry for the thread drift, OP. Just get so sick of this ignorance and blatant insults about home schooled children. |

I told my sister that my mom needed her. She was in her room, and she came out of her room, and I shot her. And she rolled down the stairs and I shot her again. And then I went down and I shot my mom maybe three or four times, but I’ll never forget this. My sister, she came downstairs and she was screaming and I was telling her that I’m sorry but just to hold still – that, you know, I was just going to make it go away. But she kept on freaking out, but she finally fell down and I shot her in the head about, probably, three or four times. 911: Are you in the kitchen? Evans: Yes. 911: Where’s your dad? Evans: He’s out of town. Washington, D.C. And, uh, I guess for future reference, I don’t really want to see any of my family members, like visiting or whatever. I just don’t want any type of visitors. 911: You don’t want to hurt yourself, do you? Evans: Just to let you know, I hate the feeling of killing someone. (Sighs) I’m going to be messed up. 911: You just take a deep breath. We have deputies coming, and they’re going to help you. Just to let you know, we’re going to help you, we’re not going to hurt you. Evans: I understand if ya’ll want to. 911: No, we’re there to help you, Jake. Everybody thinks we want to do bad things, but right or wrong, we want to help people, and we’re gonna help you. Do you understand that, Jake? Evans: Yes. 911: Is it a gated community? Jake, would you mind turning any of the porch lights on? Evans: I have turned the front lights on. (pauses) I was thinking of my sister. She was 15. 911: How long ago did (the shootings) happen? Evans: About, uh, 30 minutes ago. (breathes heavily) 911: You’ll be alright, Jake. Evans: I’m really worried about, like, nightmares and stuff like that. Are there any times of medications, and stuff? 911: Well, I think there is. I don’t know, I’m not a doctor but … I’m sure your family will get you the support you need. Evans: I don’t mean to sound like a wimp or anything, but this is, wow, I’ve never, like, done anything violent in my whole life. 911: You don’t sound like a violent person. But um, help will be provided for you. Medical and psychological. That will be provided, so you don’t have to worry about that right now. Take deep breaths for me now, you’re doing fine. In through your nose, and out through your mouth so you don’t hyperventilate, okay? Evans: (breathing) 911: Good, you sound a lot calmer right now. Evans: I didn’t want them to feel pain, that’s why I used a gun, but it’s like everything went wrong. 911: Jake, my officers are almost there, would you be willing to walk out on your own? Evans: Um, yes, I forgot to say before I called, I put the gun on the counter, it’s still loaded. 911: Okay, that’s fine. I’ll stay on the phone until it’s time for you to walk out. Are you on your home phone? Is it cordless? Evans: Yes. 911: Jake, what I want you do to is walk outside, but when you’re walking outside, stay visible, don’t walk behind any furniture. When you open the front door, put your hands up in the air, just walk very slowly, and walk outside, and keep your hands visible, alright, sweetie? I’ll talk to you later. I have met home schoolers and for the most part they were very balanced and could think for themselves. They were very mature and interesting. There is just weird people no matter how they are schooled. But I would sadly say the public schools are no place for children these days. The dumbing down in them is just incredible. And if the child is different in any way the school wants to drug them up. Now they are starving them with crappy lunches. Evans: Thank you (puts phone down) 911: You’re welcome. Not just because they decided homeschooling would be fun. Something was probably going on with him. They were probably trying to help him. :( Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19011623 Too bad they had a gun in the house where he had access to it. If they knew this was a troubled child they should have made sure all guns were secure and that he did not know where they were. He took the gun from his Grandfather who lived across the street. Grandfather was a retired policeman and Jake knew where the gun was located. |

Even if he didn't have a gun, he still had access to knives. Sure, he wouldn't have been able to kill 13 people like the Aurora theater shooter was able to do, but stabbing 2 people at close range when they'd least expected it, would be feasible. |

Probably not a blue shirt, but imagine the comments if he was black. |

Quoting: Texan Buckeye Don't start! Homeschooling IS odd. Or at least it generally ends up that way for most people. The Homeschooled kids I have met have a pretty fair grasp of academics but very little social skills at all. They also seem (for the most part) very brainwashed to one view or another. i.e. unable to think for themselves. That said, so long as proper socialization can happen- Homeschooling would be a good thing. It just doesnt seem to work that way usually. Also this has NOTHING to do with Homeschooling and from the audio it appears this bastard was in high School (a regular High School) until recently. This is about a society going out of control and dare I say- Evil. Well,I know several homeschooled kids that attend Ivy League universities, participate in sororities and fraternities (believe me, if they were "odd" in any way, the current members wouldn't pledge them), and participate in dorm/student government. I am tired of the slander toward homeschoolers. PERIOD. More likely, this kid had a video game habit and had lost touch with reality. That could easily be said for public schoolers. What will it take to wake parents up and get their kids out of these indoctrination centers? It would be interesting to see statistics of HS and PS nutcases. |
