Are Teachers Underpaid?
POLL: Are Teachers Underpaid
 Yes
 No
 Maybe
 Blank (View Results)

I'm always hearing how underpaid teachers are. I've read different things. I know as a teacher most days I feel underpaid, I feel overly stressed and beat down physically and emotionally.
But are we really as underpaid as everyone thinks?

“The demands of the job require that teachers make hundreds of decisions, large and small, each day, that they work for hours after the school day ends, and that they continuously engage in professional development activities to remain current. It’s quite intense. These are factors that very, very few private sector jobs require, and those that do compensate handsomely.”
[link to www.schoolbook.org]

"Raising pay alone won't boost teacher quality. Economist Dale Ballou shows that better qualified teacher applicants - such as those from more competitive colleges, with higher GPAs, and specializing in subject areas such as math and science - are actually lesslikely to be hired than other applicants, probably because principals and superintendents are biased toward the traditional teacher education route. Ballou and Michael Podgurskyshow that raising pay without reforms would draw more applicants and keep older teachers from retiring, potentially lowering the quality of the teacher workforce."

So as a tax paying citizen what do you think? Do you think teachers bitch to much about their pay or do you think they don't deserve the pay they get?

They are underpaid!

To be a Teacher you need to invest huge Amounts
of Money in your own Education, you need to live
close to the School which is sometimes more than expensive
and it is a Full Time Job!

Teachers should get the same amount of Money as every
Academician, they need to study the same Time like a Med.
and the Job is not that easy as many People think!

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
They are definitely underpaid for all they do. You hear a lot about the bad teachers but people without kids don't know the truth. They only know Internet rumors.

Most teachers, not all, work harder than almost anyone else. They go home after a 12 hour day and work another 3 to 4 hours. Dealing with the average piece of shit kid SUCKS.

The entire education system needs to be fixed and the government needs to get the hell out of the system.

We should take half of what we put toward genociding and put it toward education though. But we need to raise the standard for the schools AND teachers and pay them what they're worth. Teachers are responsible for our culture's future. They should be held in the highest regard and given every tool that they need. Of course low brow slackers who failed school will dissagree. But they are just an example of how the system failed.

If you want to see how a REAL education system works, look at the country of Finland. They do it right.

But like everything else regarding kids, the real problem starts with parenting. Most parents aren't capable of properly raising kids. This is
The real problem. We need mandatory parenting classes or something for these retards. Maybe castration is a better option.

I mean WTF!? anyway. Thats like only 2 houses and a car here, things many work a lifetime for, should be given away for sure.

It isn't about money. More money won't fix this...

As a teacher for 17 years, yes they are severely underpaid for what they have to put up with in the classroom.

Whereas the pencil pushers like athletic directors, principals & supintendents who do nothing but push papers around all day & make administrative decisions do only 10% of the work that teachers do.

Double the salary of every teacher in the country & cut in the half the salary of the pencil pushers.

How about saying what their incomes are, what living expenses in the area are and what people with a similar education are payed for by the state?

Also I doubt that in a nation the size of the USA any single example will be indicative of how things are across every state.

When jobs such as teaching/nursing/policing are made attractive due to good wages a lot of people are drawn to these occupations for the money, not the job.
These types of occupations need people who are attracted because of an interest in the well being of others as soon as money is the motivation everyone suffers.

Teachers can teach on autopilot mode...
But they are vital to push the politically correct ideologies, starting with white guilt etc.

The only hard work is marking - something that can be fudged and usually is.

Private sector teachers can be great though... for smaller classes. Most classrooms have 30-40 kids = waste of time.

No,
I think it depends on where you are at...
My first year teaching ten years ago was a 24,000$ salary and I had a doctorates degree. They raised the salaries years later and it was up to 40K in the middle and 32K to begin.

I made 78K on the west coast and could afford a modest apartment, but I was at the top of the pay scale with the degree.

Very over paid.

Farm girl, you are right.

The underpaid overworked group is the teachers' aides,
called paraprofessionals in some areas.

They do the heaving lifting, figuratively and very often literally, for 1/2 the salary at best.

An aide starts out at poverty level wages and goes up with time.

Teachers ARE overpaid. And have nice benefits. They should be thanking the Republicans every day for every taxpayer who helps support their wages.
Now is the time.

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
Illiteracy and discipline are the problem not money.
Teachers have control over neither.

The system passes illiterate students on to 'protect their egos', the university trainers teach the teachers that to "teach and test vocabulary is like stabbing a child in the back."

The university system also trains teachers and admin that discipline is ??? A student can throw a teacher over a desk, stab at a fellow student with a piece of glass, fan a flaming paper on a bulletin board, or and be back sitting in that same class the next day or 15" later.

Teachers don't need more money, they need more control over what goes on in the classroom. Kick the gang banger wannabes back to their parents to deal with,(homeschooling) and then the teachers will get a chance to actually teach.
