Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13263762 Teachers have control over neither. The system passes illiterate students on to 'protect their egos', the university trainers teach the teachers that to "teach and test vocabulary is like stabbing a child in the back." The university system also trains teachers and admin that discipline is ??? A student can throw a teacher over a desk, stab at a fellow student with a piece of glass, fan a flaming paper on a bulletin board, or and be back sitting in that same class the next day or 15" later. Teachers don't need more money, they need more control over what goes on in the classroom. Kick the gang banger wannabes back to their parents to deal with,(homeschooling) and then the teachers will get a chance to actually teach. Quoting: samanthasunflower I totally agree with you. They need to kick kids out of schools and make them be home schooled or alternative schools. These kids are so disrespectful! you know they won't kick students out - there goes their money! There go the teacher units! There go the accolades for being tops in dropout prevention! Just as in other professions, some teachers work above and beyond what is expected of them. These teachers so deserve more money. Unfortunately, they, in my experience, are a small minority. What I've seen first hand are resentful shrewish women and men who don't like their jobs and who don't like their students. From upper elementary on, they want to be cool and a member of one of the student in cliques. They abuse the authority they have over the students. These have been my observations after dong volunteer work in schools for more than 30 years. I will say that the teachers 25-30 years ago were more dedicated and actually tried to teach. The kids respected them. Sure they joked about them but in the classroom, they showed respect and were obedient. |

Now they are trained that books are bad, vocab is bad and math? That new math mess? Well just look at the declining test results to see how successful that agenda was. Not. There are less and less older teachers, so yes the younger ones were more cliquish with the kids. The older teachers mostly quit. My kids used to always tell me "Miss you are not cool." To which I replied. "I never have been." I had to reteach kids in Chem class algebra in a traditional manner so they could actually do traditional Chem Science. By the end of the year they finally said " ah, now we understand why it has to be done that way." The new ed solution? Change science so it can be buried next to math. My answer was maybe. Anonymous Coward User ID: 728825 Puerto Rico 10/06/2012 07:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | First of all, I'm not a teacher, but I work with them and with administrators. I'm a school secretary in a specialized area. I've worked with supers, departmental and bldg. principals. I have educated, to date, all my children in public schools. In my humble opinion, they're lacking, in almost every aspect I've been exposed to. From weak supers to just plain lazy janitors. It's a broad spectrum of society with doctorates to illiterates. It's also a myopic view of the population depending on the size of your community. And I must say the overall view is bleak. It is broken. I can't even begin to tell you where to start to fixing it. I am considering quitting after 10+ years and putting my kids in K12, online learning. I could register as a homeschooler and still gain access to extra-curricular activities and electives such as music, art and PE. This is the general attitude of most of my co-workers. They're generally overworked and totally stressed. They wonder why I stick around for the paltry wage I make. Teachers and administrators at least make a annual salary that makes all the BS worth it, to some degree. All this and it's only October...I can't wait until Thanksgiving break, I'm already beat up.... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 24207739 United States 10/06/2012 07:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Teachers are poor students themselves and come from the lower tier of academia. If you cant do - teach! Over Paid - Too Much vacation - Too many workshops Can't be fired - Tenure its outrages, who gets a guarantee! Their pensions are bloated and way out of line, time for self funded 401k plans for that bunch. They don't teach worth a darn, but they sure can teach agendas. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 8398786 United States 10/06/2012 07:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm always hearing how underpaid teachers are. I've read different things. I know as a teacher most days I feel underpaid, I feel overly stressed and beat down physically and emotionally. Quoting: BlondeDramaQueen But are we really as underpaid as everyone thinks? “The demands of the job require that teachers make hundreds of decisions, large and small, each day, that they work for hours after the school day ends, and that they continuously engage in professional development activities to remain current. It’s quite intense. These are factors that very, very few private sector jobs require, and those that do compensate handsomely.” [link to www.schoolbook.org] "Raising pay alone won't boost teacher quality. Economist Dale Ballou shows that better qualified teacher applicants - such as those from more competitive colleges, with higher GPAs, and specializing in subject areas such as math and science - are actually lesslikely to be hired than other applicants, probably because principals and superintendents are biased toward the traditional teacher education route. Ballou and Michael Podgurskyshow that raising pay without reforms would draw more applicants and keep older teachers from retiring, potentially lowering the quality of the teacher workforce." [link to www.realclearmarkets.com] So as a tax paying citizen what do you think? Do you think teachers bitch to much about their pay or do you think they don't deserve the pay they get? Hey babe Yes they are.Hows the boobie Do ? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 25042174 Japan 10/06/2012 07:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The school day is over at 3:10 but most teachers stay at the school far longer than that, or at least have to take their work home with them (grading papers, making tests, etc.) Many teachers, especially teachers of elementary school children, have to spend their own money on supplies for their classes. The pay scale for teachers varies depending on where they live and where they teach. $60,000 in a large city like LA or Chicago isn't very much. Teachers in smaller towns and cities make far far less... Teachers are forced to teach the curriculum given to them. Teachers do not have freedom to teach. Teachers do not have the authority to discipline. Teachers have to deal with your disrespectful kids (Probably learned from their disrespectful parents - most of you are on here too) all day while you are out socializing at your office (you act like you work so hard - you don't do shit) So yes, I would say teachers are underpaid, especially in America, where they have to deal with your shitty, moronic kids. |
