Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
One hour a day to plan?

Schools are chaos.
Your teaching 3-4 different classes. Say Chem, Physics 1, and 2 and one of your Phy 1 classes is filled with Special Ed. and Behavior disorder students. So you have to plan 4 lessons a day.

You don't have good texts because they are so out of fashion. And if you don't have a masters or PH.d. in the subject your winging it. You have to teach to state standards and 50-70% of your class is illiterate so they don't have the vocabulary to even comprehend what you are suppose to teach let alone the math skills and the ability to sit in a desk and focus.

As well you have to modify up for Gifted and down for Special Ed. and you were never trained for that, but its all part of the agenda called EGO.

And the next year due to the turn over you are assigned to entirely different classes.

You cannot plan in one hour a day. You spend a chunk of your summer doing that.

Teachers don't need more money, they need more control over what goes on in the classroom. Kick the gang banger wannabes back to their parents to deal with,(homeschooling) and then the teachers will get a chance to actually teach.

I totally agree with you.
They need to kick kids out of schools and make them be home schooled or alternative schools.
These kids are so disrespectful!

you are in germany? how can we compare? all i have to say is that i think it is ridiculous how many teachers are paid more than the average resident in their district. the teachers over here don't even work a full year. deduct two months off in the summer, two weeks off at christmas, one week off at easter and every single federal holiday and out of a 365 day year i do believe that all you work is 180 days, yet you're paid a yearly salary?

you have a union, and at least in new york, you have tenure which means no matter what kind of job you do, good or bad, you can never be fired and still we are told you are not making enough?

you are fully covered for medical, dental and vision for not only you, but your entire family. you are given 'personal days' to attend to the family pet or just shop if you feel like it.

lets see have i missed anything? oh yes, you are given one hour a day to plan what you are going to do with the other five in your classroom, and in some cases you are not allowed more than 22 kids in any class?

combine all of the above and johnny still can't read. what do you think, are you underpaid?

The West coast school I was at....
mandatory union dues
got excited and blew their wad supporting Obama $$$

next year a new superintendent from a national program
training generals and high end corp folks to go in and rein in urban schools, put the screw on them with the new contract
and they must have been low on funds because they did not fight it

Bingo! The CAFR accounts provide them with tremendous retirement accounts. They can retire at 55!

Half the teachers might not even be aware of its existence, but that's where their retirement funds are.

our major cities are bankrupt and so is our society nothing will get better until teachers are allowed to discipline and teach respect rather than self-esteem.

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
Now, I get a glimpse of how stupid or young many GLPers really are. You all think that the ones in charge of opening your children's minds to ideas and educating them to be more than brainless oafs are scum unworthy of even the acknowledgement they have.

You do not understand that not just anyone could or would be a teacher? You do not understand that patience and a love for the youth gives them the ability to open the mind of even some of the most willfully ignorant children?

These people live to serve and make this world a better place, while the majority of you only have the decency to spit at their feet?

Teachers are all individuals with patience and control that is not found in most people. It is a profession that can and does break people who are not cut from the right cloth.

Those of you who voted yes with resentment make me sick. Teaching is a profession of willful servitude in trying to make the world better for future generations.

Such disrespect shown to some of our most humble and well intended citizens. They know the pay is low, but the task is honorable to suffice the sacrifice they make.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23917036

Save all that, some of the worst experiences of my past were at the hands of a so called 'teachers'.. there's to many of them, many are not qualified to teach. Whole profession has been turned into some big government entitlement program. The few goods ones are far to few and way out numbered by the bad these days.
 Quoting: ceawaves

As you say, I save those words and keep them unaltered. Your view of teachers is tainted by some personal vendetta. I know not all teachers are the best, but at least they are trying.

By the way, teachers are not entitled to anything. They are paid for the months they work, and they can choose whether or not that want a portion of their salary to be rationed for the summer. Insurance for them is extremely high compared to how much they make.

Instead of pointing fingers, maybe you should get to know a teacher. It is much more mature than reverting to, "Well they get something and I don't!" Especially when you are wrong.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23917036

I have no personal vendetta, made peace with that a long time ago, but the fact of the matter it's worse now.
Look, I know how the system works, I also know a lot of teachers, good ones..That does not mean they're all good.
And you're not telling the truth about the extremely high insurance rates..Fact is their monthly premiums for insurance has not gone up in years, last i heard, (last year) it was around 60 dollars a month.
You must be a 'teacher' because you know how to lie like a dog..After they're in tenure which takes only a few years, they have a life time of benefits. you're barking up the wrong tree, Fido..

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
All it took was two universities leading in new ed agenda to start schools spinning plates. New curriculum, new techniques, every year. Old school teachers were told they did not know how to teach.

It wasn't the politicians, or admin or teachers.

It's not about liberals.

It's European Social Democracy. Most of the kids in the urban area I taught at thought ESD was totally cool. But then again there was a statue of Stalin in that town and a huge art piece down town of a worker with a hammer. And that was home of one of the two ed univ..

You'll have to work a little harder on your insult skills though, they are lacking in expertise and finesse.

Generally teachers have NO CHOICE on whether to 'join' a union; IT'S MANDATORY !

Best way to sum up this whole argument, is to post the bumper sticker we placed on our cars in 1969, when people wrote the SAME ridiculous ideas to the local paper when our second year salary proposal was published in the city paper
that said ...." If you think education is expensive, TRY IGNORANCE ! "

Under paid? I think they are some of the dumbest fuckers in our society. They have done more damage to our kids than people can imagine...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22421783

Why do you think that?
You don't think it's the parents fucking their children up?
 Quoting: BlondeDramaQueen

When kids spend 8/9 hours a day with school teachers and spend 3/4 hours a day with their family, guess you they listen to.

They are fed societies crap all day every day. These idiot teachers just regurgitate all the crap they are told to. Just robots!

They disgust me. Fat, dumb, afraid fools. And we give our kids to them!!!! Crazy.

Over paid? They should be spit on!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22421783

You cant be serious, You sound like you never went to school. Its not the teachers who choose what to teach it's the school board you queefnugget. Also out of the 6-7 not 8-9 hours of school you have math, gym, art, breaks, lunch, science. Get a brian. Only 1-2 hours max is societies crap.If its more then that its because the student chose that. Also what fkin kid wants to spend all day with their parents anyway.

Teachers are underpaid. I was a horrible student along with many others. Try dealing with unwilling kids all day long.
 Quoting: Meligrove

actually it's state standards that decide curriculumn
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13263762

Well in Canada its the school board. Either way its not the teachers.

 Quoting: ceawaves

I am not a teacher, and nor do I feel the need to call one a dog.

A teacher I knew was paying $300 dollars a month, and she still had a $900 dollar deductible for this cheap insurance you speak of.

I wish I needed to say more to have a rebuttal for you, but for all you said, these scant words decisively expose your ignorance.

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
The good ones are underpaid, and those that leech the system are grossly overpaid. Should not be employed at all. We absolutely need to overhaul the entire public school system to one based on merit. The good teachers should be completely for this; however, they are far outnumbered by the bad and their unions.
Within the surreal depths of "reality" lies the truth.

You have to know your mark better to make your insult hit the spot. Granted there are general barbs for the populace.

You only took days off if you were sick or utterly exhausted, inner city kids will shred most substitutes.

That's the propaganda all right. But "they" were just doing as "they" were instructed by the universities. And the young ones follow the pied piper with out a question.

We're not talking about A teacher, we're talking about the over all lot of them.. 300 hundred dollars a month, and 9 hundred dollar deductible? Where was that? Cuba? I didn't feel the need for you to call me out because of some remarks i made about the 'acknowledge knowledge' had about the whole over all situation, i'm sure you know the differences. you called me a liar just the same, only in a round about way.

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
Yes, those poor striking teachers only $79,000. a year!!
I mean WTF!? anyway. Thats like only 2 houses and a car here, things many work a lifetime for, should be given away for sure.

Bad news is, it would probably cost more to employ any without a socialist marxist slant and who can actually read and write, so looks like we all screwed for life.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24969748

They must work in the ghetto to get that amount. That's the only way bad schools can get teachers to work there is to make the salary higher.

Teacher's in safe, nice neighborhoods make between 25,000 - 40,000 a year. More if you have a masters, and even more if you have a PhD.

Teachers also spend a ton of their own money on the kids for many things the school won't provide.

Are they underpaid? I don't know. In my state, you have to have more than just a four year degree to be a teacher. If after 5+ years of college, you are only making 30,000 a year, tell me if they are paid enough.

It's a profession of love. It's not chosen to make your fortune.

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
Very over paid.
 Quoting: ceawaves

Yes.

They work hard, but not as hard or as intensely as many others, and their "human capital" is not that high.

Almost anyone could complete an education degree at a 3rd rate college. Therefore the products of that education should not command high pay.
