Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
I'm always hearing how underpaid teachers are. I've read different things. I know as a teacher most days I feel underpaid, I feel overly stressed and beat down physically and emotionally.
But are we really as underpaid as everyone thinks?

“The demands of the job require that teachers make hundreds of decisions, large and small, each day, that they work for hours after the school day ends, and that they continuously engage in professional development activities to remain current. It’s quite intense. These are factors that very, very few private sector jobs require, and those that do compensate handsomely.”
[link to www.schoolbook.org]

"Raising pay alone won't boost teacher quality. Economist Dale Ballou shows that better qualified teacher applicants - such as those from more competitive colleges, with higher GPAs, and specializing in subject areas such as math and science - are actually lesslikely to be hired than other applicants, probably because principals and superintendents are biased toward the traditional teacher education route. Ballou and Michael Podgurskyshow that raising pay without reforms would draw more applicants and keep older teachers from retiring, potentially lowering the quality of the teacher workforce."

So as a tax paying citizen what do you think? Do you think teachers bitch to much about their pay or do you think they don't deserve the pay they get?
 Quoting: BlondeDramaQueen

How about saying what their incomes are, what living expenses in the area are and what people with a similar education are payed for by the state?

Also I doubt that in a nation the size of the USA any single example will be indicative of how things are across every state.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22089462

This is what teachers are paid in New Jersey per year. Remember...they have a few weeks off for Christmas vacation...also Easter vacation, and other holidays. They have every Saturday and Sunday off. Summer vacation usually starts after the first week of June, and begins again the second week of September.

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
Illiteracy and discipline are the problem not money.
Teachers have control over neither.

The system passes illiterate students on to 'protect their egos', the university trainers teach the teachers that to "teach and test vocabulary is like stabbing a child in the back."

The university system also trains teachers and admin that discipline is ??? A student can throw a teacher over a desk, stab at a fellow student with a piece of glass, fan a flaming paper on a bulletin board, or and be back sitting in that same class the next day or 15" later.

Teachers don't need more money, they need more control over what goes on in the classroom. Kick the gang banger wannabes back to their parents to deal with,(homeschooling) and then the teachers will get a chance to actually teach.
 Quoting: samanthasunflower

I totally agree with you.
They need to kick kids out of schools and make them be home schooled or alternative schools.
These kids are so disrespectful!

Yepp. And we can barely do anything about it in fear of "emotionally abusing the child"

Re: Are Teachers Underpaid?
I have been a teacher in the industry for 30 years. Are teachers underpaid? That depends on the teacher, on the district, on the scruples and integrity of the teacher.

For my part, I have always given 100%. If I tallied the hours (and this is true for all of the teachers who really care and give their utmost) I work about 80 hours/week. My hourly salary comes out to about $3.50 per hour. That hasn't changed over the last 10-15 years where I work.

So, are there losers out there milking the system, or doing harm to our children?
Yes.
Are the majority of teachers like that?
I say not.
If you have been a teacher, you would understand the tremendous sacrifice we make to do the right thing by your kids.
Those of you uninvolved would not have a clue. I guess that is why you think we are so very overpaid.

They are underpaid!

To be a Teacher you need to invest huge Amounts
of Money in your own Education, you need to live
close to the School which is sometimes more than expensive
and it is a Full Time Job!

Teachers should get the same amount of Money as every
Academician, they need to study the same Time like a Med.
and the Job is not that easy as many People think!

You are such a predictable libtard with every vapid post you make.
Blame that on the quality of the education you received at the hands of a string of "underpaid teachers".

Do you realize that their 'yearly' salary is only for 9 months of work and that they get ridiculous pensions paid at taxpayer expense. Isn't something like 70% of their full salary for life?

No actually teachers are bankrupting the nation and it starts with their union, which promotes godless Marxism as a replacement for American values.
