Seems like astronomers are accident prone - this one is interesting in 1987 he was crushed in the telescope dome. His work included the study of dwarf stars:

MARC A. AARONSON, ASTRONOMER, KILLED BY REVOLVING DOME
AP
Published: May 02, 1987

An award-winning astronomer known for his research on the age and size of the universe was crushed to death between a door and a 150-ton revolving telescope dome, the authorities said today.

The astronomer, Marc Arnold Aaronson, 37 years old, was crushed Thursday night in an accident at the Kitt Peak Observatory, said Lieut. Edward Beumler, a spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Aaronson was leaving the 18-story building that houses the telescope to check the weather when he was killed, Lieutenant Beumler said.

When the door leading outside is opened, the telescope's dome automatically stops turning, but the dome coasts 5 to 10 feet before coming to a full stop, the authorities said. Awarding of Prize in 1984

Peter A. Strittmatter, head of the University of Arizona's astronomy department, said Mr. Aaronson was an associate professor in the department.

Lot's of danger involved with being an astronomer it seems.
 Quoting: 0pEnLy~Gr@y

Absolutely, it is very dangerous indeed

I know of two amateur astronomers who were killed in suspicious circumstances while observing a total eclipse of the sun. This cannot be a coincidence; two astronomers, both studying the same astronomical phenomenon, both killed within a few minutes of each other... but wait, there's more....

There are several methods of observing total solar eclipses;

- projecting the image onto a card using a telescope
- placing a mylar objective filter over a telescope
- looking through a piece of exposed, processed film
- Arc welding glasses
- lining a large cardboard box with white paper and and poking a hole in one side them placing the whole thing over your head - effectively makes a pinhole camera

WELL UNBELIEVABLY, THE TWO ASTRONOMERS WERE USING THE SAME METHOD, one that is recommended by, you guessed it, NASA!

(illustration)
[link to dl.dropbox.com (secure)]

Apparently, while trying to get a better view, one walked onto a busy highway and was hit by a truck; the other one stepped off the top of a 12 story building!!

I think this is all part of a world wide conspiracy by the NASA, to get rid of as many of those pesky amateur astronomers as they can. Can't have people operating completely outside of their control can they?

Re: Astronomer teams dies! ...coincidences?
Just a quick look of Wikipedia and US .gov stats says that
the average mortality rate was 794 deaths per 100 000 people year 2009 in US.

US has about 7000 astronomers who are member of American Astronomical Society. International Astronomical Union has about 10 000 members. (Meaning, most have a university degree of some level in space related stuff)

If we use the death statistics from the recent years, it means (counting from 10 000 population of "astronomers") 79.4 astronomers die each year (for any cause). Let's make it 80 (most are men, so precise statistics will go a bit off even in here, as mortality rate of men is higher than women)

Percentage of each death cause shows following (for all of population):

6.2 % Unintentional injuries
1.8 % falling, drowning, poisoning (unintentional?)
0.5 % fire accidents
2 % traffic accidents

In total, about 10.5% of the population dies in this kind of accidents.

From 10 000 astronomers, 80 dies yearly, so about 8 of them "should" statistically die from common "accidents" mentioned earlier.

If you take heart diseases and cancers into account, about 45% of the all death cases are related to them. (Mostly older people, of course). This means that of 80 astronomers about 36 dies yearly from "natural" reasons related just to heart and different types of cancer.

Of course we can't rule out the possibility for many of those "natural" deaths actually being sophisticated murders with poisons and/or bio weapons, but at least we can compare the number of accidental deaths to population average.

If somebody has a reasonable list of all the deaths with their dates and age information showing, it would help.

If the number of accidents that happen to astronomers yearly is way over 8/year, it could be worth more detailed search.

Some places to check for data:

I hope the quick calculations are about right, please correct me if wrong. No point making more detailed statistics unless we know the number of actual deaths and other details.
 Quoting: Wid 22718549

brilliant piece of analysis.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19198791

If there are 10,000 astronomers, the probability that exact 8 of them would die, given the probability of any one of them dying from an accident is 10.5% is calculatable by a binomial probability distribution formula. Knowing this an calculating this probability yeilds a probability of 0.00%. The probability of 80 or fewer dying in an accident is 0.00% The expected number that would die is 1050 astronomers of the 10,000 would die an accidental death -at some time during their lifetime.

So, then, we have 1050 as the expected number of astronomers to die at some time during their lifetime.

We can use the poisson probability to determine the number of astronomers do die PER YEAR. If the average astronomer lives to be 75 years old, we would expect 14 astronomers on average to perish per year throughout the 75 years by chance alone. The standard deviation would be approximately 7, and so, in a given year if 28 or more died, it would be absolute proof of murdering of astronomers.

Therefore, we would need a list of all the deaths for each year, and preferably the assumed cause and age (and sex) of the "victims". The most common causes of deaths for major age groups are easy to find too, so we could rule out some of the possibilities. I personally think "the best proof" would be if the total number of deaths for astronomers for some or each year would be statistically very high, compared to average population. In western countries, highly educated people tend to live longer and healthier (but there are exceptions like dentists etc.) so to make a very detailed calculations is a bit tricky, but still doable and reasonably reliable with enough data to work with.

If we would like to take into account all "astronomy related" deaths, it will get almost impossible as it's pretty much impossible to make reliable estimations of the sampling sizes for each professions. To take into account only people who work in the actual field of astronomy, it's still reasonable.
