"The Gates of Hell: Forever-Burning Crater of Poison"

BURNING 24/7 since 1971

Turkmenistan is known for its offbeat tourist attractions, but one of the most unusual is the hole in the ground known as The Gates of Hell. The hole, an impressive 230 feet across, is filled with leaping flames that have been lighting up the area for 40 years.

. In 1971, a group of geologists drilling in the Darvaza area accidentally punched through the rock to a deposit of natural gas. The ground crumbled and fell away beneath the drilling equipment.

Since methane is considered dangerous when released into the atmosphere, the geologists decided to light the hole on fire and burn the methane off. They clearly expected it to be a simple, short-lived fire that would burn itself out within days. It was anything but simple.

Now, four decades later, the fire burns on. Looking into the pit, it is easy to understand how it got its name. It almost feels like stepping into this fiery abyss will take you directly to the devil’s lair. The massive deposits of methane below the entire field simply continue burning while curious travelers often make their way to the dangerous location with the sole purpose of peering into the bizarre burning hole.

In 2010 the Turkmenistan government decided that something should be done about the crater. President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov ordered the hole covered up and the other gas deposits in the area explored for their mining viability. As of press time more than a year later, the crater continues to burn 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Derweze (Turkmen language: The Gate, also known as Darvaza) is a village in Turkmenistan of about 350 inhabitants, located in the middle of the Karakum Desert, about 260 km north from Ashgabat.
Darvaza inhabitants are mostly Turkmen of the Teke tribe,

The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas.[1] The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 metres (230 ft) at 40°15′10″N 58°26′22″E. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided the best solution was burn it off.[2] Geologists had hoped the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today. Locals have dubbed the cavern "The Door to Hell".[3]

Thanks for posting this vid! Maybe now is the time to watch disaster stock aquisitions before the fact as in who bought what.
What has not been considered seriously is that the BP well likely (imo) began having trouble as early as the previous February, hence the buying disaster equip & selling stocks a month before it blew. I really think this was problem=solution selloff rather than premeditated. Then what followed all those chemicals (investments) and no regulations..stupid stupid psycho-narcissist response (aka "practical"). On-the-spot disaster capitalism.
I just don't think they're that in control or smart enough to engineer to that extent.

The smoking gun! This is what they are really worried about! Methane!

This is it, I'm pretty sure folks - the BP oil spill which fractured the sea floor, Jack Reeds theory and now "Officials advised the Assumption Parish President on Thursday that Bayou Corne sinkhole area has high levels of methane in nearby water wells, posing risks to health, fire and explosion and that residents need to heed the mandatory evacuation order. That day, parish officials postponed Saturday's resident briefing with no explanation."

"Methane gas leaks are spreading throughout the south Louisiana area. Within four months, as of this week, methane bubbling sites have increased to twenty-eight, including in Pierre Part, outside the mandatory evacuation area but within hearing distance and jolts of seismic activities where foul chemical odors are nauseating and burning, as some residents there have reported.

Ok, let's think this through clearly. If this LA sinkhole is truly the threat that we fear, we should see a mass influx of military and government equipment to that area for the aftermath of the disaster. Can anyone confirm an influx of military and/or government equipment/personnel near LA?

A number of years ago a guy considered himself to be prophetic. I think his name was Diesel. He stated that due to gas seeping into 'cracks' all over this continent that there would result in devastating fires throughout the land. This is a simplification of that but he may have foretold things pretty accurately.

It would be great if someone could find his prophesies and post them.

Been reading threads on the sinkhole situation and have a few comments and questions.

I'm here in East Texas about 80 miles west of Shreveport. I've noticed nasty foul odors on and off for about two years. I work outdoors and I guess when the wind catches just right you can smell it. Seems like it's coming from the south. Sometimes it does smell like rotten "something" and a couple days ago there were two occasions it was overwhelming. I covered my nose with my shirt because the odor was extremely bad, came up for air and it was still there, seemed like it lasted maybe 30-45 seconds and then it was gone. I don't know anything to compare it to except maybe diesel x10 but no rotten egg smell.

I saw a post about reporting any vehicles or equipment that may be related to this so yesterday I made a point to watch. Now this is in between working so I probably missed a lot more I'm sure.

This is Highway 271 and vehicles traveling south.
(helicopters on and off last week flying southwest)

Numerous pickups/large trucks and semi's with huge generators in the back

Semi's carrying, I have no idea what it is, huge equipment, looks new, kinda like a propeller on a boat motor but the size covers half a semi, a light green in color.

A large truck and on the back a small plane that can land in water. Never saw that before, not around here.

Lots of official looking pickups with their emblems on the side of the truck but couldn't see what it said; one I caught said United States Department of ????, black pickups with green lettering on the side of the door- Northridge, I think.

A huge bus, Jerusalem Gateway with a church name, probably nothing

Bus with Carter Bloodcare

Right now that's what I recall seeing. Maybe nothing and reading too much into it.

---Had some unusual customers:

There is a pipeline coming from the north and eventually through our town, had several customers with the pipeline. Two guys, you could tell hard working, northern accents, working with the pipeline, got to visiting and talking in general about the situation the world was in, then out of the blue, he said he has stored water in his basement. I guess the way he said it was like he was telling me to store water. The other guy was very quiet, didn't have much to say.

A couple was traveling in an r.v., I asked where they were headed, they looked at each other and after a long lull, said, "We don't know, wherever the road takes us". They seemed uncomfortable after that.

Several people from Louisiana in the last few days. I asked what they thought about the sinkhole, one said it wasn't that big of a deal but had a great deal of knowledge about it, another couple, older in their 70's or so, seemed well to do, had an astonished look on their faces, wife just looked at husband to respond and he stammered a bit while he was shaking his head as to stall to think of something. He just kinda mumbled something so I didn't push it.

Just another thought- this is the same area where all the fires were last year. People here believe and some claim they saw fires being started. Maybe to clear areas in east texas to view something from above? Don't know. I will tell you that there was a guy from the Texas Forestry from California, some kind of supervisor, came to my work a week before the fires started last year and said he was stationed here for a while. I said that's strange the only fire that had gone on around here was one somewhere around Tyler, Tx. He didn't respond.

Now for my question, anyone know what areas in east texas might be affected?

All of this maybe nothing but thought I would post. Not trying to be an alarmist, just reporting what I see and hear.

Re: BREAKING: HUGE LEVELS of METHANE at and around LA Sinkhole!!!
Anyone else staring to think the gulf of mexico was not made by an asteroid impact?

And we've been drilling whatever it is. We should have left that whole area well alone. And even if it was made by an asteroid, wouldn't that be a good reason to think that a lot of instability would be around.

Re: BREAKING: HUGE LEVELS of METHANE at and around LA Sinkhole!!!
okay, let's get back to the original post. HUGE LEVELS OF METHANE GAS......WHERE? I have yet to see ONE LINK with any proof that there are HUGE LEVELS OF METHANE GAS. The Examiner link does not prove or show any statistics or links to this effect. Again, I ask WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THIS INFORMATION? If there are NO STUDIES, NO TESTS, NO DATA, NO LINKS THEN IT'S ALL BULLSHIT.

OMG!!! Are YOU in over your head!!! You have much reading to do and I would spend all day doing it.
This situation is the most dangerous thing I have ever seen in my life and you think it is a joke?
Wow! Ignorance is bliss I guess.

Not ignorant, actually more informed than most people here. Informed enough to know that this is NATURAL GAS leaking from a salt mine cavern, and NOT methane gas. Again, I ask for a link to ANY STUDY indicating that it is METHANE GAS. If you can't provide one, then I guess this entire post is bullshit.

For what it's worth, I am NOT a science nerd, to say the LEAST, but my husband is an electrical designer (flow systems) in the oil and gas industry, working mostly with natural gas, and when I mentioned the sinkhole situation to him, the first thing he mentioned was methane. (I had not even said the word.) Now, again, I am really stupid about discussing anything scientific with him -- he's into science and I'm into history, so I just dropped it.

HOWEVER, after reading the above comments, I googled "relationship between natural and methane gas" and came across the following article from Time (Magazine) Science dated May 9, 2011. A short excerpt follows in bold print. (Sorry that I am not computer literate enough to link the whole article, "Another Fracking Mess for the Shale-Gas Industry", but if you are interested, you can probably find it easily enough.)

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE:

"Methane is the main component of natural gas, and Vargason naturally connected the methane in her water to the gas operation just outside her home. But though the gas company installed a venting system on her well to reduce methane buildup, it denied there was any connection between drilling and contamination — a position the industry as a whole has maintained for years. "Unless you can prove how the contamination came, you can't do anything about it," Vargason told me.
(See "Frack: Is Shale Natural Gas Worse for the Climate than Coal?")

"As it turns out, however, that proof may not be so elusive. A new study published in the May 9 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows that methane levels in water wells near shale-gas hydrofracking sites are 17 times higher than they are in wells that are far from shale-gas operations. The peer-reviewed paper is the first independent scientific confirmation of something advocates, environmentalists and homeowners have passionately argued, and that the gas industry has vociferously denied.
