Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23093311 Haven't owned a gun since I was a teenager, been out of the loop for 20 yrs or so, I can shoot :) Just wonder what the general consensus was on a good cheap reliable with some stopping power :) how about getting a 500+ rounds through your carry weapon before deciding to carry it... as for choice of conceal, stopping power? I personally carry a kahr k9 and have in the past carried a kimber ultra carry, para 1911, i prefer the kahr, im most accurate with it, i can wear a t shirt and shorts and youd still not know i have it and its dead button a perfet little carry weapon. choose what feels right in your hand and whats comfortable, my buddy carries a sw 659 single stack, i think hes nuts but it works well for him in that aspect... just get a bunch of rounds through whatever you choose, also in the even that you must use it be prepared and able to afford to lose it for awhile or indefintly by law enforcement. this is exactly why i DON NOT carry my kimber any longer, i wouldnt want to lose it if it ever came down to having to use it, i can afford the 700 kahr lose but id hate to lose my kimber which has over 16 invested. you dig? as for stopping power dont get talked into 40/45 is the only viable option.. many say the 9mm has no stopping power, riddle me this batman, you wanna get shot with one? thats always my response, and its always the same answer.. You can probably get a glock 19 gen 3 for near $500 brand new. This is going to be superior to most other guns just because it will take any ammo, will have almost no problems, and is just a tank of a pistol. It's the ak47 of pistols. Spend the extra money... It's worth it. |

Im not a fan of the glock but youre wrong, theres a reason the glock has become the service weapon of choice for most all police depts, cause theyre dead reliable.. Dont blame the weapon cause youre limp wristing the pistol, improper shooting technique will make the best of compact and semi compact hand guns fail.. FACTS Kiddos... as for the AK, first hand knowledge, you can piss on it roll it in the sand, run over it with a humv pick it up and it will still fire. Id trade my m16a2 issue for an ak any day of the week. oh and i fucking hate glocks.. Last Edited by Kealo on 10/07/2012 03:14 AM |

My advice to the opie is get something that feel "right" in the hand to you.. it coupld be an lcp, a sig229, a sw 659, a glock a what the fuck ever... dont fill the opies head with biased bullshit, I fuckin hate glocks, i hate the way they feel, i hate the way they shoot i hate the way they carry but nobody can say that they are a bad weapon or they always jam, thats utter bullshit.. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 11361590 United States 10/07/2012 05:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Go to a gun shop and handle many different models- or better yet, rent and shoot them if that is an option at your local store/ range. There is no one gun for everyone- that's why there are so many different handguns on the market. Grip angles, ergonomics, and trigger pulls/ mechanisms differ wildly between various models, and you'll likely have to try a few to find one that works for you. Make sure the gun is unloaded, and raise the gun up to your line of sight (with your finger off the trigger, of course!). Look for ones where the sight picture lines up for you naturally, without having to alter your natural grip. This is a good place to start at. Also do yourself a favor and research the various maker's warranty and repair policy, as well as their track record with their customers before buying one. If I had to give a short answer it would be this: once you find a few that work for you, get the biggest one, in the biggest caliber, that you are willing to train regularly with and, if you carry, one you will carry every day! This doesn't mean it necessarily has to be a huge handgun- if the biggest piece of hardware you are willing to carry everyday is a .380 pocket pistol, than so be it. Just remember that sub- compact guns are easy to carry, but not that easy (or enjoyable) to shoot. You'll likely practice with your carry weapon more if it is a compact or full size weapon, and you'll be much more proficient with it if you need it. I won't get into the caliber argument, as this can go on endlessly. I will however suggest you start with a .380 at the minimum. Most modern defensive ammo performs well, and any of them is better than nothing. I carry a .45 b/c that is what my carry weapon of choice is typically chambered in, but I would not feel under armed with a 9mm. Also, buy good quality magazines if you're going semi-auto. This is the weakest link in any self- loading pistol, and the cause of most malfunctions that are not shooter- related. My votes: -S&W M&P -Springfield XD -Glocks (suggest gen. 3 or earlier) - Ruger LCP or LC9 - Sig P250 -CZ-75 -Baby Desert Eagle (a.k.a. Jericho) -Rock Island Armory (1911 pistol clones, full size and compact) These are all affordable (less than $400, new or used in VG condition), and I have personal experience with them so I feel comfortable in suggesting them. Shop around as well, there are a lot of good deals on used guns and you may find something even nicer in your price range this way. If you need to go cheaper, Kel-Tec's p-11 functioned well for me when I owned one- but the trigger wasn't great. I can't say anything personally about Hi-Point since I haven't owned one, but a lot of people say they run reliably. And avoid at any cost the Jennings, Bryco, Raven, and any other gun made of extremely low quality materials- they may be cheap, but you run the risk of catastrophic and possibly dangerous failures. |

That is a good list. All of those can be had cheap second hand. If OP were to get a curio/collectors license{easy and cheap to get} he could load up on many fine firearms for next to nothing. I have a friend that built up an nice collection buying old surplus with one of those. It's such a good deal I've thought of getting the curio permit myself. |
