BREAKING: Shell fired from Syria lands on Turkish village, Turkish artillery return fire at Syria

ISTANBUL - Turkish forces fired across the frontier into Syria on Sunday after a shell launched from Syria landed in Turkey's border town of Akcakale, underlining Ankara's warning that it will respond with force to any violence spilling over into its territory.

It was the fifth consecutive day of Turkish retaliation against incoming bombardment from northern Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad's forces have been battling rebels who control swathes of land close to the Turkish frontier.

The continued exchanges are the most serious cross-border violence in Syria's revolt against Assad, which began in March last year with protests for reform but has evolved into a civil war with sectarian overtones which threatens to draw in regional powers.

The latest Syrian shell landed near a plant belonging to the Turkish Grain Board, the Dogan news agency reported, several hundred metres from the center of Akcakale where five civilians were killed on Wednesday in previous Syrian artillery fire.

The Syrian Observatory for Human rights said shells fired in retaliation from Turkey on Sunday landed near the Syrian town of Tel Abyad, where rebels have been battling Assad's forces.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

NATO member Turkey was once an ally of Assad's but turned against him after his violent response to the uprising in which activists say 30,000 people have died.

IDF intelligence preps for Assad’s demise

The IDF’s top intelligence officers toured the Golan Heights on Thursday in preparation for the possible disintegration of the Syrian regime and its expected ramifications.

IDF Military Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi and senior Military Intelligence officers discussed “how to adapt the tools, intelligence collection methods, and research of Military Intelligence to the threats in the region.”

Kochavi said that predictions the Golan would soon be a frontier with Syria’s 18-month-long civil war were quickly coming true.

One dead, five injured in Israeli air strike on Gaza

An Israeli air strike over the Gaza Strip has killed one Palestinian, local medical sources told AFP. Five other people were wounded in the strike which targeted a motorcycle in the area. Two of the injured were children. Witnesses say the man killed was a member of the Popular Resistance Committees militant group, although that remains unconfirmed by the organization. The Israeli military said it was checking on the reported strike and had no immediate comment.

A huge explosion has been heard near the police headquarters in the al-Fahhamah neighborhood in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which was caused by a "terrorist" car bomb, state television reported.

Car bomb explodes near police HQ in central Damascus

An official within the Syrian government claims a car bomb has exploded outside the police headquarters building in the capital, Damascus. Residents also reported hearing a large explosion.

­Some witnesses also reported hearing heavy gunfire immediately after the explosion.

It is not yet clear whether the blast caused any casualties, or what the extent of the damage to nearby buildings is.
