Who all here lives in Austin TX? I'm strongly considering it. I'm a musician living in LA and really tired of LA. I'm looking for a good music scene thats not too crazy expensive. Thoughts?

If you dig chicks who wear way too much makeup and believe money is the only source of happiness, enjoy extremely hot and humid weather and ignorant rednecks who think the flat, bone dry, lifeless state of texas is the most impressive thing humanity has ever laid eyes on, then I'd say yes.

Good clean place to live. Lots of job potential. Tech centers, gaming centers, lots of building going on.

Music, arts, recreational area.

I worked at Dell Computers in the Corporate offices and I did not meet any ignorant, redneck people.

Good schools.

Lots of young families.

We lived in the Round Rock/Georgetown area.

Yes, it is hot in the summer, but if you are working all day it isn't really going to matter.

Good Luck in whichever state you choose.

Re: I'm thinking of moving to Austin TX...good idea?
I lived there for a few years, ended up moving further south away from the city because they don't believe in the rule of law. They value bums, and libtards over anything that makes sense.

My car got totaled by a neighbor, and I knew knew who did it because they were drunk and crashed into it. The cops said they could not do anything due to the laws enacted by the libtards.

Even with paint marks matching up it doesn't count. Now any other county in Texas they would take that person to jail unless they paid for the damage.

If you love having a bum at every street corner who has a cell phone, and nice clothes Austin is for you. I especially love the fake leg braces.

Austin is a libtard shithole. End of story.

Re: I'm thinking of moving to Austin TX...good idea?
I live in Austin. It used to be a great town. Now it has become like Dallas. It's vibe is gone, which is why they cram the "Keep Austin Weird" campaign down everyone's throats. Because Austin is no longer weird and it used to be cool and weird and very laid back. Those days are long gone. You would never see girls walking in high heels down 6th street several years ago. Now it is all you see. Fake tits, trendy clothes, just all around fakeness everywhere you go. Austin used to have a real-ness about it, people were friendly and genuine. Now most everyone is just uptight and unfriendly. Austin was cool years ago because it was the place you could totally be yourself. Now it is just full of people trying to be ""cool. It is beyond fake. Many of us that moved here in the early 90s loved that the people of Austin were so down to earth. But it has been taken over by Dallas type people and people from CA and it has totally lost its character. Now I am thinking about moving somewhere else.

If you can stand hot as hell weather (above 100 for many days). If you like the Dallas/CA fake and pseudo-trendy hipster vibe, if you like extremely high rents and over-priced homes, and horrible traffic, then you might like Austin.

Other than that, most people I know that used to love it are starting to hate it. Plus Formula One is coming here. Another nightmare to contend with.

I live here and was in the music scene(mainly electronic) and can see how it would be good for someone looking to get a start in the music scene and get connected with other musicians. people are generally nice but I feel pretty isolated being a GLP member cause people here are just as asleep as anywhere else. finding a job isn't too hard and cost of gas is like 3.56 right now which is pretty decent. you should come down though cause we need more GLP users here.

Music scene might be all there is. I moved from VT to Co and then to Austin.
I wanted to die.
The heat is ungodly.
The ignorance is stultifying.
Get used to hearing "Good Cow".
Every time you hang up the phone expect to hear "BAaah!".
There is a huge dress to the nines fag Opera scene.
Floods.
Flowers drop to the ground in a wet 'splat'.
Trees are all scrub oaks snakey and creepy.
Vietnamese squat at busstops (relief from the rest of it).
Cactus.
Tamales.
Roaches.
Fleas.
Fungus.
Bloated dead cows along the highway.
A strange german community nearby.
Gov't buildings.
Mexican food only, or "burgers".
I packed up the car and left my exhusb there.
Good f*ing riddance,
I didn't even stop to take a picture of Texline as I drove out of there and didn't look back.

Lived there for 14 years and loved it. Central is liberal. North and south suburbs are moderate. The west is conservative. A little something for everyone and a very tolerant town. The only women who wear too much makeup live to the west or are just there for the political sessions every 2 years. My son still lives there. He loves it.

In the summer of 2011 there was a few months of temps over 100 degrees. MONTHS of white, sticky hot sky.
Weeks of 110+ degrees sucks the life out of every living creature.
Its rough, I'm telling you.
No rain.
None.

You will learn, by experience, what the word "languish" means.

Thats something to think about.

I lived in Austin for four years back in the 90s and just loved it.

Sure it's hot in the summer but the are great indoor and outdoor things to do. There are also great venues for musicians to show what they've got. Austin's winters are mild, which more than makes up for the summer heat,IMHO.

Austin's a friendly city with lots of restaurants, clubs, a giant university, bookstores, ... you'll have a blast. San Antonio is just down the road and the Gulf Coast is an easy drive. The Hill Country to the West is beautiful.

I doubt if you'll regret a move to Austin.

Re: I'm thinking of moving to Austin TX...good idea?
Did your ex hookup with one of the countless hot girls here? Even at a job fair the place is overrun with modelesque girls oozing sex appeal. Once you live in Austin you're so jaded you can't see the mediocre women lesser men in other cities eagerly try pointing out to you. As a bonus, the girls are unpretentious. Easy to get numbers, and they don't care if you don't call after a one night stand. They make for a great party scene and Devil's Cove is one of the 5 top party coves in the country. I'm glad they dress to the 9's in trendy short dresses and tall stilettos. Frumpy girls do me no good when I'm out looking for flash, glam, and skin!

Aside from that, the city beats the hell out of a big one like San Antonio (I'm from L.A.). I don't get the "music scene" as they all sound like crap to me. Get in Katy Perry and I'm in, but ACL and SXSW just muck up traffic for me. It's 'hill country' but to someone used to mountains it's flat. In fact, first comment I get from friends visiting from the coast is "it's so flat here". Other than the dirtbag liberals always trying to steal from me (supposedly to give to those who did not earn it), it's the best all-around place I've lived in this country.

Who all here lives in Austin TX? I'm strongly considering it. I'm a musician living in LA and really tired of LA. I'm looking for a good music scene thats not too crazy expensive. Thoughts?
