Re: I'm going deer hunting this weekend... give me advice ?
A person can irrationally hate hunting, hunters.. whatever.

The fact remains that hunting and harvesting meat to eat is perfectly in tune with nature. No different than gathering native edible plants. That is why God put them here.

Going to a store and buying meat and other foodstuffs that are processed, irradiated, hormone-injected, color-enhanced and preservative-laden.. is not natural.

If you can't see that.. I don't know what else to say.

Read 'The Jungle' by Upton Sinclair.

Re: I'm going deer hunting this weekend... give me advice ?
ishi of the yahi would fast for three days,
do a sweat lodge and scrape his flesh clean
with a willow branch, abstain from sex for
a week and seek a vision while singing
traditional tribal/ancestral songs to
seek spiritual assistance in bringing
the deer, a buck, to him, one that was
willing to give its life to ishi's people.

then he would sit silently in a grove
for hours if need be, waiting for this
one particular deer, none other, before
killing it swiftly with a single arrow.

a prayer dance and song to the deer's
spirit after the kill is essential, as
well as giving the dying deer a drink
of water to allay the pain of passage.

get real with the forest or don't go.

Shoot it in the neck. It will fall where you hit it. You will not need to track it. Is will also leave all the best meat. Don't drink too much coffee or water before you get in the stand. It will make you need to pee. Sit in the stand till late in the morning - 10:30 and start early in the afternoon - 3:00p. Bucks in rut do stupid things at odd times of the day - like just running out in the open to look around. If you can shoot a doe and you will be hunting the stand a bunch this season...shoot a momma that has two fawn with her. The fawn will come out on the food plot early every morning and evening to eat and will bait out the other deer every day.

Not going to read through all of these pages so...

wash with water only the morning of the hunt no soap and use no deo or unscented

wash all clothes in water only no soap or softners

no smoking

keep down wind from deer entrance point

dont chase too soon after the shot, it may lay and die close, if it knows your coming it will try and go as far as it can

gut drag and tag

ok, guys
thanks for all the pointers
just 2 days left
again we'll be covering the terrain on foot
there are no blinds there anywhere

likely someone, will go thru the thick brush while others are
waiting at the escape routes

the weather is getting cold all of a sudden and it might rain too, it will be interesting, I'll likely be the least experienced of the group...

Make sure of your target.
Know what is behind your target (don't shoot unless you know where the bullet is going if you miss).

My dog brought me a huge deer head the other day....hmmm nice...it stank and was rotting and would have given her guts ache for days had she eaten it.

No. Gut it if it's hot or it will spoil. If you have to back-pack it out, you might de-bone it first. Leave the bones for the "coyotes, buzzards, and worms. They gotta eat, too."
