I served three terms on a MUD (Municipal Utility District) -- we had some 100 year old pipes and they were always failing. Especially after a major event such as a fire. There would be so much throughput and stress on the water mains that we would often see them fail within a few months of the event. A lot of these old pipes would has several inches of sediment inside the pipe that had hardened over time and helped keep the pipe together. When a lot of water was pushed through the lines -- that sediement would get flushed out. We think that was causing week areas of the pipe to fail. It could take months for the failure to get to the point that we would know about it. respectfully disagree with this assessment... there are other telling facts to consider but infrastructure sounds like a loose term being thrown around by the puppet masters Dude a lot of the infrastructure that the U.S has was built in the 1960's and 1970's at the latest. There is plenty of infrastructure in a lot of towns built in the 1940's and earlier. You guys stopped spending money on infrastructure years ago, you spend most of your money on arms. |

Suburbs, of course, much later. When we buy car batteries, we buy them with given 'life expectancies' of roughly 2 to 4 years. Pipes and lines have life expectancies as well. Series of freeze and thaw cycles, for example, that metal or terra cotta can endure and maintain integrity, for example. Stuff is wearing out. A lot of that stuff was installed within a few decades. It's losing its integrity, and has not been upgraded. If, on the other hand, someone could show me that a huge high percentage of water mains installed at various times -- some a hundred years ago, some fifty, and some twenty years ago -- were all failing together all of a sudden... now that would be remarkable. I actually share that hunch, but I also realize that with the Internet and widespread videotaping capability, part of the reason it feels like more is happening is just because I now have the capability to "see" more than I ever have in the past. Most of your examples are local press, which would have been invisible to you only a few years ago. Just because a trend now exists in my head does not mean it exists in reality. I am a researcher helping to point out hidden relevant facts to sheep and they cannot even wrap their minds around what it means to have solid ground becoming unstable and disintegrating before your very eyes over night. Couple that with the earth quakes, volcanoes, bridge collapses, water main breaks, sinkholes, cracks showing up in bridges, houses, roads, dams..over passes I think it is beyond conclusive that something wicked this way comes. Most of the big cities are in the same boat with 100 year old (some older) water pipes and sewer systems. The cost to replace thousands of miles of pipe in hundreds of cities is staggering. The money is not there. Typically a small leak starts and slowly increases and liquifies the soil around (depending on where you are) then the whole area craters. Where I live it is clay and so you end up with some sinkhole affect, but mostly if goes up and you end up with the street flooding and geysers. In sandy or regular soil conditions you get the big sinkholes. This is compounded in big cities because of all the other underground infrastructure that the water can follow and flush soil, etc. That is why some of the sinkholes are so large. I am not disputing all the other crazy stuff that is happening but the water main breaks are 95% ancient pipes giving out. |
