Re: Neurosurgeon, has an NDE during a coma, personally confirms consciousness exists outside the brain!
so, could he interact with his environment when in a coma?

if not then this is BS

because the exact definition of conscious is being able to interact with the environment!

its all just conjecture, there is no logic in this. a bit of wishful thinking mixed in with the memories of someones hallucinations in a coma.

You asked if he could interact with his environment and I directed you to his testimony where he claims that he could. That is all.

There is no logic to consciousness,it is the greatest mystery in the known universe.
 Quoting: stormer

yes there is logic, for what exists is logic.

when we say 'consciousness', we are simply stating 'being able to interact with environment'

we use our bodies functions to interact with the environment

the definition of a coma is the absence of the ability to use the bodies functions.

this person while in a coma was 'UN-conscious'

now as far as our thinking goes, we are a feedback loop that stores and fetches information from our memories based on what we predict is going to occur next based on what happened in the past.

for instance, take a sound in your memory that you can hear internally. ask yourself is this sound real? then realise its not even a sound, its the chemical cypher of the interaction of pressure with hairs in your ear!

in other words we are a chemical synthetic copy of the environment that shaped us.

All the chief arguments against near-death experiences suggest that these experiences are the results of minimal, transient, or partial malfunctioning of the cortex. My near-death experience, however, took place not while my cortex was malfunctioning, but while it was simply off. This is clear from the severity and duration of my meningitis, and from the global cortical involvement documented by CT scans and neurological examinations. According to current medical understanding of the brain and mind, there is absolutely no way that I could have experienced even a dim and limited consciousness during my time in the coma, much less the hyper-vivid and completely coherent odyssey I underwent.

your definition of consciousness is incorrect thus your argument is flawed.

Consciousness is awareness of self, which is a lot broader than "interaction with environment."

Just so you know, being an atheist and believing in an afterlife aren't mutually exclusive.

I'm not atheist I believe in the potential for a god-like being, whether this is a conscious being or just "everything in existence as one living entity". though I lean towards the latter.

I don't believe God magically "poofed!" the Earth in 7 days or some ****. I try not to criticize anyone who does though, since if their god really is all powerful, it's easy to understand why they'd believe what they do (a truly all-powerful god could make a 9,000 year old Earth and retroactively make things billions of years old. I'm not explaining myself very well here, but as an example would be DC's DCU comics history. In story the universe was remade. Technically, in-story it was only a few years old but had billions of years of history. Not a good explanation, and I'm just making myself sound stupid, but I've no idea how to properly explain what I mean. Maybe insert "time happens all at once" or something similar. Or time moves in all directions. Someone can probably explain what I mean better than me.

I do believe in an afterlife too. I try to ignore religion as a whole though, as they just feel like large brainwashing cults (no offense). They obviously (usually) have truths in them, but I say take the truths from them and walk on past the dungheaps. If you're using your religion for hate, you're doing it wrong.

Living inside a hologram and being partially materialized holomorphs, is it that hard to believe the impersonal whole could 'project' a personified image of Self for those present to witness?

To the people who are saying, 'he's only selling a book', why would he need to? Neurosurgeons make a lot of money... and this discussion will make him a pariah in plenty of circles, it could cause him to lose his license depending on the reaction.

Several years ago now, my father had a stroke; it continued bleeding and he went into a coma. He was put on 'comfort measures only' and slowly his body systems shut down. I was cleaning up after dinner about 20 miles away from his hospital room when I suddenly sensed a presence I knew was him in the room, immediately followed by a small force (having about the impact of a glass marble) hitting my right temple and entering my skull; it was undeniably my father's personality and he was 'saying' "Wheeeee!!!! This is FUN!!" The spirit or force or personality, whatever you want to call it, stayed with me as a secondary personality for many weeks after that, slowly fading over time. My brother called from the hospital a few minutes after this occurred to tell me that 'dad had just died'.

After deciding that I wasn't crazy, hallucinating, wishful-thinking or anything like it I knew that he had given me one hell of a goodbye present. And by the way, both he and I are atheists.

We survive physical death, no religion necessary.

As the Jesus character in Jesus Christ Superstar says,

"To Conquer Death, You Only Need To Die."

NDE's mean NEAR death experience... which means you don't REALLY die!! Believe what the Bible says, that when we die, we sleep until one of two resurrections, NOT what a neuro-surgeon who's losing oxygen to his brain and didn't really die is saying, or seeing. Ask anyone, it's called hallucinations, NOT proof of what happens after death

What's the point of believing something that is obviously not true? Why is it so hard for a bible believer to believe that we continue to live on after our bodies die. Eternal life - eternal afterlife. That's in the bible isn't it?

Re: Neurosurgeon, has an NDE during a coma, personally confirms consciousness exists outside the brain!
I have no doubt that these experiences occur, and that they are legit.

Although, something to consider is, all the experiences seem to take place within the context of the person's belief systems. For example, a Christian is more likely to see Jesus or God or someone they might identify as such. But would someone who was raised in a different religion, different environment, with different belief structures, see the same thing? Say someone who grew up in the Amazon jungle, with no concept of Christianity or Islam, or any religion for that matter, what would they see in their NDE? A Jaguar spirit? Something they revere?

This could easily explain whether this experience occurs in the brain or not, since if it is "external" to our brain, then the experience wouldn't adhere to our concepts.

Seems like something worth exploring, to me.
