I think it is a Melange between all of them
but you need to add "creating Jobs"!
So many People worked for and in this Project,
they all would be unemployed without this LHC!
Quoting: the mighty Atom Thats why they keep making false scientific discoveries like electrons traveling faster than the speed of light which turn out to be false. And the Higgs boson has not been found yet another PR stunt to keep the funding for their cushy jobs.
