IMO, this is one of the most informative, revealing, and important pieces of information we have received yet.

The implications of whaqt is being said is qastounding, and terribly frightening for locals.

Officials: Sinkhole math doesn’t work
End date of evacuation remains unclear

By David J. Mitchell
River Parishes bureau

October 22, 2012

The math isn’t adding up in Assumption Parish, and some parish officials are worried about what might be happening underground near a Bayou Corne area sinkhole.

State Department of Natural Resources scientists said they think a subterranean Texas Brine Co. salt cavern failed, allowing earth to partially fill the 2,250-foot-long vault and ultimately cause the sinkhole to form about 200 feet to the northwest of the cavern’s top.

Parish officials say the volume of the brine-filled sinkhole is much smaller than the amount of displaced earth now in the cavern, prompting worries about other unknown subterranean voids or gaps left in the area by the shifted sediments that could lead to further disturbance at the surface.

With this uncertainty as well as other factors — such as the natural gas still trapped underground — officials said the end date of the evacuation of the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou communities remains unclear.

“Until we figure out what is going on below the surface, it would be very negligent on our part to ask these people to come back into their homes,” Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said.

But an estimated 3.3 million cubic yards of sediment along with oil and gas flowed into the formerly brine-filled salt cavern after a breach along the cavity’s lower edge.

Scientists have said they believe it is this movement of material into the cavern that released pressure in the compacted earth underground along the edge of the salt dome and caused the sinkhole to surface in the forest swamps on Texas Brine’s leased property.

According to the accounting of Waguespack and Assumption Parish Homeland Security Director John Boudreaux, though, some 2.7 million cubic yards of displaced material — now inside the Texas Brine cavern — are not reflected in the brine-filled space of the sinkhole.

Boudreaux and Waguespack said it is their worry that the possible voids or gaps underground left by the 2.7 million cubic yards of earth that shifted could lead to sinkholes appearing in other locations.

In early August, DNR scientists presented a worst-case scenario for the sinkhole.

Under that model, which was based on a complete collapse of the Texas Brine cavern and a displacement of its entire volume, scientists estimated the existing sinkhole would reach 1,400 feet in diameter and still be far from any residences.

The current failure filled about three-fourths of the cavern’s space with earth. The sinkhole is roughly 550 feet across and has had occasional edge collapses that incrementally increased its surface dimensions, according to figures provided by the parish, DNR and Texas Brine.

Boudreaux said the assumption all along has been that the existing sinkhole would continue to grow, but last week he asked who is to say whether another sinkhole might form somewhere else.

DNR spokesman Patrick Courreges said none of the scientists and officials have seen any indications of that happening, but they are still being cautious until they fully understand the mechanics of the incident.

Assumption Parish Police Jury President Marty Triche said parish officials have to rely on scientific findings to make decisions about the evacuation order and will err on the side of caution and not put people in harm’s way.

He said the evacuation order remains a work in progress as officials consider the status of the vent wells aimed at removing natural gas from underground and find answers about whether any voids are actually underground.

“Obviously, it has been a long time, and still there is no definitive answer yet. The scary part is at what point will we get a definitive answer,” he said. “I am not sure we will ever get that.”

Morning Mia.....yeh, I'd say that is finally happening. But I'll take it a step further and say not just locals, but local officials too, may be being lied to.

First thing I thought when I read this article, was okay, now the truth is going to come out.

Either all that dirt is missing and yeh, there's a big hole waiiting to open up somewhere else, OR Texas Brine had way more than the claimed 20 cubic yards of NORM in that cavern.

9:00 a.m. Update
October 22, 2012 //

Texas Brine advised that clean up in the sinkhole continued throughout the past weekend.

The Shaw Group has advised that they are preparing for observation well #4, on the south side of Highway 70. They are also preparing to re-work vent wells #1 & #2 (on Dugas & Leblanc property east of the community) in an effort to vent gas from the aquifer.

The next resident briefing will be held on tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church Hall in Pierre Part.

Vent wells number 1 and 2 are the two wells that didn't have enough gas pressure to vent. Not sure what "reworking" them means.

Tomorrows meeting will be very interesting.

I'm not sure, based on the available information, how much of LOUISIANA will be there come Spring, let alone those trees. Creating a thread & living in the area doesn't make you right about this. Then again, once it blows, all of the evidence will be gone, as I'm convinced TPTB intend. I know, you hate People bringing up the dead & dying trees but take note of the fact that I have NOT said the dead trees are THE problem, they are but a symptom of a MUCH larger, cascading series of events. I am curious to find out how many ways that the key players & TPTB have figured out how to proffit from all of this but rest assured they will proffit from it.

Wrong. Living amongst these trees all my life DOES make me right. Do you live among them to be able to say different?

I know, you hate People bringing up the dead & dying trees but take note of the fact that I have NOT said the dead trees are THE problem, they are but a symptom of a MUCH larger, cascading series of events

Actually, I have never seen any post of yours before, to take note of anything you've said. Certainly not on this thread.

I'm not sure, based on the available information, how much of LOUISIANA will be there come Spring,

Then what the FUCK do you suggest I do if you don't think Louisiana will even be here? Do you think people can just up and leave an entire state because other people like you, without any PROOF, says we will all die if we don't? And how far should we go then? What and where would YOU say is safe? I'm not the one that isn't living in the real world. YOU are.

If my way of handling, coping with this, is standing up for, and hanging on to the facts that I KNOW are right, such as a little thing as whether trees or dying or not, then why don't you fucking let me have that without trying to make me feel like a fool with your "shakes head" attitude and comments?

If you can't read my post from today and know that *I* DO KNOW the seriousness of this situation, then the bigger problem is with you, and not me.

I do not think Patassa is a paid government shill. I think he/she is a local who wanted to believe what has been told. Sad for all the locals down there is they are learning the government does not tell the truth.
Until you are living in the situation you can not argue what/how you would deal with it. Just my opinion and we all have one.

With that being said. I think everyone's reactions are a little too much.

Patassa, I come here because even though some threads are out there there are lots you can learn from and glean the truth.

Not sure what species of tree are around the sinkhole but I did see it mentioned in one of the threads a while back. Sometimes Google can be your friend and it took me 2 mins to come up with these.

For a number of species of evergreens.

"Did you realize that evergreen needles change color in the fall too, just like deciduous trees do? It's true and it often causes alarm in homeowners when their evergreen trees start to drop needles."

[link to byf.unl.edu]

For the Longleaf Pine which it says is native to the area it says drought can be a problem causing needle drop as early as July, not sure how bad the drought hit the area earlier in the year. It would also mean checking where the needles are shedding from on the branches to understand any problems.

"Some longleaf pine trees are shedding their needles across the sandhills and coastal plain, a normal occurrence this time of year, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources."

Interesting video, mush water I the area even if it's not technically the sinkhole and just floating vegetation, ....question, with all that oil and water and whatever else is in it, just how far away from the sinkhole does this pollution flow? Can it be detected 100 yards away, 500 yards, it has to be awful even away from the hole....

The video is to short and fast and poor quality to detect a sheen of oil in the stand of trees, any report of how far it is spread from runoff?

Thanks.

When pressed by residents, Hecox said the standard he is using to determine whether it is safe for evacuated residents to return to Bayou Corne is whether he would tell his children and grandchildren to go back to Bayou Corne.

He said he would not tell them that at the present time.

“Right now, the evacuation order is appropriate,” Hecox said.

Patassa,

I tried to report the reply on page 5 by AC11614913 as being abusive but you have to type in the two code words. It never accepted the code words. It doesn't explain the format of how to type them in. Ex: which word do you type first. Do you use the caps or what appear to be caps in the code word. Which do you type in first? Do you type one word with a space before the next one?

I, for one, would not be offended if you were to delete some of these posts using filthy language!

I guess I musta missed something because I do not understand why some people would be offended by what you have to say, and, if they are, they don't have to read the thread! Just stay off and don't post please!

I appreciate you trying to get the truth, as you see it, out. I respect your opinion and I hope you don't let these children, trying to impress people with their knowledge of profanity, stop you!

DEBUNKING ENENEWS and CLEARING UP BAD INFORMATION:

[link to enenews.com]

I know y'all don't want to hear this, but enenews, has it wrong, as is usual. I loathe even posting their link here, but feel it's necessary.

That is not a gap, but a ditch, or "slew", as we call them, that has always been there, but not so obvious with foliage from trees and duckweed being abundant. As the trees shed, and the duckweed is dispersed and dies, it is more obvious.

The flicker pics from Aug 25, and Sept 13th clearly show it. You can look through these pics and see not only that one, but others that form a drainage system. I just can't figure out why people so badly want only to think the worst about all of this, like it's not already bad enough.

Also, the butane tank is far on the other side of Texas Brine, and you can clearly see that "gap" makes a turn and starts heading for the road, and not past Texas Brines area, or road.

What's particularly interesting in these photos, is they show what I have said before....that ALL of that area is water. Swamp. You can see in the first photo where the sun hits the ground in the bottom left....the reflection of water, as well as several lighter spots. All of that light green is simply a floating vegitation called duckweed. Sometimes it's marsh grass. But bottomline, is it's all water throughout the area. Even the so called grassy road, (pipeline corridor) which also has always shown water from day one.

The sinkhole is indeed expanding, and was predicted last night to expand to possibly 1500 feet, but in a westerly direction, which is toward the community, and not the butane tanks, although of course, it's only a prediction, and Dr Hecox admits this is all an unprecedented occurence. Now, THAT is what is scary.
